Another match day, another 3 points closer to the title. Chelsea have looked far from their best the last 2 months. They've struggled to dominate or even control games. Matches that should be over by the first half, have dragged on into stoppage time. Yet, in the Premier League, the Blues continue to win.
That has been the identity of the squad during the second half of this season. They haven't been at their best, or even close to it. But, they haven't been losing games either. Chelsea have been frustrating to say the least. Especially after witnessing the first half of the season, where the Blues were deadly.
However, one thing that cannot be called into question is their resilience. Despite all the setbacks they have suffered this season, they still remain 7 points ahead in first place. They haven't endured losing runs in the BPL. Mourinho’s men have been unwavering and quite honestly, ruthless. Not in their particular games or even during moments of brilliance but overall. Ruthless in their ability to suck results out of games where there appeared to be nothing.
They've blown leads, surrendered goals of pure brilliance, and pure stupidity. But despite all of these setbacks, the Blues have gotten results. The game at the weekend against Stoke is the perfect example of this. Chelsea looked to be on their way to an easy victory when Hazard scored his penalty. Stoke hadn't really tested Courtois and the blue shirts were dominating possession.
Enter Charlie Adam. The Scottish midfielder scored from inside his own half to stun the Blues before halftime. Chelsea had once again blown a lead, and morale was low amongst the fans.
However, Chelsea came out after halftime looking revitalized and ready to play. They dominated the possession again, and waited for Stoke’s keeper, Begovic to make a mistake. They capitalized, and continued to threaten for more during the rest of the match.
Although, it wasn’t pretty, the Blues found a way to win, against a determined Stoke team. This is the character that a Mourinho team typically possesses. They are resilient, determined and persistent.
Chelsea will win the title if they are able to continue to find results. With Manchester City’s loss on Monday, it looks like their biggest challenger will be Arsenal. If Chelsea can find results against Arsenal and Manchester United, it will be there title to lose. What has made Chelsea so dangerous this season is their resilience and ability to get results when it looks bleak. The rest of this season will rely on their character more than anything else.
