Jose Mourinho has revealed that he TURNED DOWN the chance to sign Angel Di Maria and Radamel Falcao this past summer after being contacted by their agent Jorge Mendes. He revealed that Chelsea simply could not afford either of them because of the new FFP ruling.
Falcao in particular was someone who had been linked with Chelsea on a number of occasions but as soon as he virtually sold out to play for the money he did in the French league, his wages were then always going to be a problem.
Just look at his situation at Manchester United. According to reports, he is being paid around £260,000 per week but so far this season; has been unable to hold down a regular first team start. That's over £1m per month but what has he achieved in the Premier League half way through the season??
Di Maria has been the most impressive of the two but again, his wage demands leaving Madrid are also reportedly sky high and that's what had put the manager off of signing them.
In an article posted here Mourinho said:
"Jorge told me Di Maria and Falcao are his players and he has to find solutions for them. But if Chelsea doesn't have the financial capacity to pay eight, nine or ten million euros a year, because of [financial] fair play, of course Mendes has to think about his players.
It really is a ridiculous amount of money isn't it and I personally feel that Jose was right to reject both of them looking back. The acquisitions the manager made last summer have taken Chelsea to another level and it's seems that all of them have slotted into the squad perfectly well.We couldn't bring Falcao or Di Maria because I didn't want to, either. I can't have a player earning 10 million when others earn three, four or five. That would have caused an explosion."
Also in saying that, you have to question what would happen if Manchester United fail to qualify for the Champions League this season. Would Falcao go back to the money in France? Would Di Maria ask for a move away? Who could afford either of them!?
Jose was right to reject them! What do you think?
