Chelsea beat Liverpool at Stamford Bridge last night in a game that had everything and it took a Branislav Ivanovic header in extra time to win it.
Let's be honest, both ties were cracking games and a real testament to both sets of players.
With the game evenly matched after Anfield, both sides came into the game with the intention to win and in the first half it was the visitors who created the better chances to score with Courtois called into action twice to deny Moreno then Coutinho.
The big Belgian stood firm and saved Chelsea when the visitors were on top. In the second half Chelsea were much, much better and it was the turn of Mignolet to deny Costa not once but twice.
You will read about Diego Costa and his ongoing battle with Skrtel all over the media this morning but despite the stamping issues, Costa and Chelsea should have been awarded a stone wall penalty in the first half but it wasn't given.
More on Costa in a later post...
So with the game evenly matched and poised at 0-0 it moves into extra time and once again both teams go on the attack.
I'm not going to comment on the yellow cards that should have been and weren't given because it doesn't matter now but you guys saw the same as me last night.
It was a mistake by Rodgers to bring on Mario Balotelli late on and it was his pass that found Hazard 30 yards from goal and he was brought down by Lucas. It proved to the the decisive moment as from the resulting free kick Willian floated the ball into the box and Ivanovic unmarked, eight yards out headed home to give Chelsea the lead.
Liverpool to their credit played fantastic in both games and have almost stumbled across a formation that makes it very difficult to play against. But for a final pass or some decisive finishing, Chelsea could have been in trouble.
In saying that, the same could be said of Chelsea as time and time again we moved the ball into great positions but lacked the final ball.
Chelsea held firm to see the game out and we are off to Wembley which is massive for the new group of players!
Just a couple of concerns from the game and that's the injury to Cesc Fabregas and the pull that Filipe Luis had. I hope both are OK for the weekend.
To a man Chelsea gave everything last night and it was great to see after last weekend. It will give everyone a massive life heading into City this weekend.
It's another trip to Wembley for Jose Mourinho and for Chelsea!!
