Jose Mourinho has been speaking to BT Sport this Christmas and has revealed that he believes that this Chelsea team can win the Premier League this year! Although confident, he also reiterates just how important it is to keep our feet firmly on the ground.
The two league victories over Hull and Stoke after defeat at Newcastle have been vitally important and see Chelsea sit three points clear at the top of the Premier League this morning.
Speaking of the reaction since we suffered our first defeat of the season and our title chances, Mourinho said:
‘I like the reaction after defeat.
I feel we can do it, We are ready to do it. We have prepared ourselves. We really believe that we are going to do it.
At the same time, feet on the ground. You have to understand the country where we play. The level of competition makes things more difficult than everywhere else.
At the same time it’s more beautiful because every point is a point, every game is a game and every weekend is a weekend and emotions from the beginning till the end. We are title contenders. We are one of the best teams. We are the team that plays better football and obviously big opponents, but we are title contenders.’
There is no question that we ARE contenders this season but as I have said many times, there is such a long way to go and nothing is won in December.
One thing I will say is that you can see the difference in the manager this season compared to last. We watched Mourinho bemoan his strikers and their lack of goals. Mourinho openly stated that we were not contenders but just a little horse; stating that this season Chelsea would be contenders.
Now one season forward the difference is there for all to see. For Jose to state that they really believe they can do it is a fantastic. He instilled the winning mentality at the club in 2004 and it's been here ever since.
I cannot help but feel the same now as we did back then. There is a swagger about Chelsea again and we are picking up important points in games we struggled in last term.
Let's hope Jose and the team deliver this season and beyond!
