Mourinho: The king of mind games |
After the game, Mourinho spoke of a "campaign" against his side, that has cost Chelsea the game. It is fair to say that Fabregas definitely didn't dive. However, it could also be fair to suggest that if Cahill hadn't dived recently, and Ivanovic didn't continue to play act at any sign of contact, then we probably would have received the penalty there and won the game. The Chelsea players now need to address the play acting and cut it out completely, so that this witch hunt that has started within the media will stop. Obviously, if Chelsea are named as 'divers' by certain sections of the media, regardless of the truth of the subject, it should in no way be reflected in the referee's decisions. This does seem to be what has happened, as it has happened at a huge time in a big game directly after Sam Allardyce's comments on Boxing Day.
Consequently, the timing of this may be deemed as useful for Mourinho. Anytime Chelsea haven't gained three points this season, The Special One has taken the pressure away from his team and their performance. The referee mistakes and huge Mourinho allegations move the media stories away from Chelsea's performance. The fact that Chelsea should have won and a lacklustre show in front of goal is forgotten, as Mourinho moves himself into the firing line in place of his players. Jose is always incredibly defensive when it comes to his players, and this "campaign" against his players once again moves away from the performances in a game his team should have won.
Is Mourinho's media performance more mind games to put pressure onto referees and to protect his players? Or does The Special One truly believe his team never dive? Either way, the fortress effect Mourinho brings to his clubs is in full swing at Chelsea.
