It's fantastic news that Chelsea have rewarded Cesar Azpilicueta with a new five-year contract after his performances this and last season. However, it appears that he is not the only one as reports have appeared that Thibaut Courtois is about to be handed a new bumper deal to remain at Chelsea.
For Azpilicueta, it's a fine reward and justification for his role at Chelsea last season into this. To be left out of the team at the beginning of last season in favour of Ashley Cole and Branislav Ivanovic, Azpilicueta kept his head down, worked hard in training and waited for his chance.
At Arsenal away in the League Cup, he was given his chance at left back and made the position his own for the remainder of the season forcing the managers hand and keeping Ashley Cole in the stands.
Jose Mourinho said that he wished he had "Eleven Azpilicueta's" in his team last season and provides an insight into how he respects the Spanish full back.
With the arrival of Filipe Luis, Azpilicueta has kept his place at left back and the Brazilian arrival has a fight on his hands to force his way in. Without question, our Spanish full back is now, one of the best in the Premier League so it's fantastic news that he will remain a crucial part of our plans for the next five years.
So to Thibaut Courtois and news on a possible new bumper contract? I am not surprised as Chelsea have made the right decision this season with him having just two years left on his current deal. Chelsea were faced with a dangerous situation if they had decided to loan him to Atletico Madrid again, with no Premier League experience by next summer, the young Belgian Goalkeeper could have quite easily exercised his right to see out the remaining year of his deal and leave Chelsea.
The made the right decision to bring him to the Premier League and he has already made some amazing saves in the three games we have seen already. He has a presence in that penalty box and like Petr Cech, when he took over from Carlo Cudicini in 2004/5, Courtois is the future of Chelsea now for the next five to ten years as he is only 22.
The sooner we get him tied down to another deal, the better. Let's hope it happens soon.
