It's the truth! Chelsea's performance last night was not good enough, not what we expect and once again our defensive frailties this season so far have come to fruition! You MUST win your home games in this competition.
I think we are all getting carried away with our potency up front at the moment and that's understandable based on the struggles of last season. However, one thing we could pride ourselves on was the solidity of our back four. For the moment, we are NOT good enough in the defensive third of the pitch and heading into Manchester City on Sunday, it's a very real concern!
Yes I can sit here and talk about the chances we missed but you have to hold your hand up, be honest and admit that Schalke had far too many of their own at Stamford Bridge too. Cesc Fabregas, Didier Drogba, Eden Hazard and Loic Remy all had good chances to put the ball in the back of the net, but it didn't happen.
Schalke with all their injury problems and illness throughout their squad, played the perfect game last night. They worked hard defensively and relied on Huntelaar and Draxler up front to cause us problems and they did. Draxler had a great opportunity to score to make it 1-1 late in the first half after Fabregas blasted what seemed like a simple chance over the crossbar from a pull back from Ivanovic. It was a warning sign.
Their goal was very, very disappointing from a Chelsea point of view. We have a corner, we are attacking and got caught on the counter attack. As Schalke break forward, Ivanovic leaves his position and comes inside to make a challenge and doesn't win the ball and from that moment on we are on the back foot.
Huntelaar was then given the time to bring the ball under control, cut inside onto his stronger foot and fire hard and low into the bottom corner giving Courtois in goal, no chance. It was what Schalke deserved because they played well.
As I said, the disappointing thing is that up until last night, we were killing teams off so far this season. For one reason or another, we just could not do it last night and it was almost as if we had travelled back in time to last season.
The Chelsea goal was a good one and another moment of brilliance from Eden Hazard to spot the reverse pass to Fabregas and the Spaniard finished well to make it 1-0.
From that moment on, you expected Chelsea to really kick on and take the game to Schalke and score another. We didn't and it has cost us two important points.
I still expect Chelsea to breeze through as group winners but we expect better than what we saw last night. When you dominate games, you have to reward yourselves with a goal or goals when you are on top to make your possession/pressure count.
I really hope that in a way, this gives everyone a kick up the arse and makes us refocus on our strengths going forward but at the same time, to address the leaky defence we have because against better sides (like City this weekend) it will cost us dearly.
Fair play for to Schalke for coming here on a run of bad form and putting in the performance they did. As for Chelsea? It's not good enough!
