Chelsea have one foreign player too many over the age of 21 within their current squad and one of those players will have to leave before the transfer window closes. Who do you think that will be?
Premier League rules state that you are allowed 17 foreign players over the age of 21 within their squad and at present Chelsea have 18 foreign players, so Jose Mourinho has his first real dilemma of the season as to who to let go.
As with any decision the club makes, it's all thought out, planned and a process is put into place. Just the other day the manager spoke of Victor Moses and said:
“We have one problem to resolve, that we have one extra foreign player at the moment and Victor is not a foreign player.
Victor is from a position where we have many solutions.
We have Hazard, Willian, Salah and Schürrle. Victor’s best position is from the sides, but he is English and at this moment we have one foreign player who has to leave.
So, until the end of the month, we have to make that decision and Victor is involved in this process, and maybe stays or maybe leaves, but because he is home-grown he is something we have to analyse as well.”
Quite literally within hours of making this statement, Moses was loaned to Stoke for the season but we still have the problem of the extra foreign player.
Between now and the end of the transfer window, there is going to be all sorts of speculation about who leaves the club and the press are reporting that any one of four players could be the one that goes. Petr Cech, Fernando Torres, Marco Van Ginkel and Mikel are the players under threat (if you believe the papers) and I just wonder if it's actually going to be a toss up between two of them - Petr Cech and Mikel?
Everyone will be looking for news of Jose Mourinho's team selection tonight at 7pm and who starts in goal. That many believe will give the biggest indication as to the future of our record breaking Goalkeeper Petr Cech.
The big guns around Europe are circling and as I posted on here before, the big man could be up for sale for as little as £10m. If he doesn't start tonight, I would put money on him leaving.
As for Mikel? Well you look at the situation with the defensive midfield position and although Van Ginkel is back from injury, the only other player we have of that mould is Nemanja Matic. Van Ginkel isn't a naturally defensive minded player so I still think that for this season, Mikel has a part to play for Mourinho. He may not start every single game, but he still will be involved.
As for Fernando Torres? I get the impression that if Mourinho didn't want him, he would have been sold by now as the manager is keen to get his deals done early to spend the whole of pre season with the players, or as much time as possible.
Torres gives the manager an option to play wide but I still believe Torres' work rate up top always gives him a chance under Jose. Torres stays in my opinion.
So there you have it. My take on who I believe will be allowed to leave the club. What do you people think?
