The English Premier League is quite simply the best league in the world and yesterday at Goodison Park was a fine advert for our game. Two teams fighting for the win, refusing to give up and it turned into a cracker!
I think both sets of supporters headed into the game thinking it would be a tight, tense affair and maybe a goal would win this one. Jose Mourinho and Roberto Martinez both pride themselves on defensive organisation and solidity so never in our wildest dreams did we ever expect to see the game we witnessed last night!
You have to give credit to both teams for the way they played and refused to give up. You have to credit Everton for the fact that going two goals down early, they refused to lie down and even going 3-1 and 4-2 down, they battled back again and again.
We can sit here an analyse the game and pick out the defensive errors that cost us the goals but I prefer on this occasion to praise our attacking performance instead.
Much was made last season of Chelsea's lack of goals from our strikers and in general as we found ourselves at the end of the season way behind Liverpool and Manchester City. Last night on Merseyside, Chelsea were very different and demonstrated fantastic finishing and a ruthlessness in front of goal that is so, so encouraging.
Diego Costa is making headlines for more than one reason (more on that in the following blog post) but is safe to say that this guy is brutal in front of goal. His two goals were clinical and made by his movement off the ball.
The goals from Ivanovic, Matic and Ramires were also excellent in their own ways and it was so good to see us take the game to Everton and continue to attack them rather than park the bus on a lead and close the game out.
This a new, revitalised Chelsea. Hungry for possession, points and for goals and if anyone had any doubts about their intent for the coming season, those doubts surely have to be put to bed after this one.
Not many people will go to Goodison and score six this season. Chelsea did and took a massive three points back to Stamford Bridge!
