With all the focus on Diego Costa this season and the return of Didier Drogba, Fernando Torres seems to be the forgotten man at Chelsea. With the pressure off of him now, could Torres finally shine?
As each season passes, Torres' situation at the club just doesn't seem to improve does it and we have had plenty of rumour and speculation surrounding his future throughout the summer.
Atletico, Inter and others have all been linked with a move to take Chelsea's record signing away from Stamford Bridge with a heavily reduced fee being spoken of. As yet, nothing has come to fruition but in saying that, the departures of Demba Ba, Romelu Lukaku and Samuel Eto'o are a sign that Jose Mourinho intends to keep faith with him.
As do the Chelsea fans judging by the great reception he received as each member of the squad was introduced to the crowd and once again when he replaced Costa during the second half.
Chelsea fans appreciate the fact that Torres is and has always been a grafter, someone who is willing to work hard for the team even if he fails to score. It's seems that the manager is the same.
So what of Torres and the new season? It's clear after the fantastic pre season he has had, Diego Costa will be our number one striker. Dependant on the opposition and the way the game plays out, it's a toss up between Didier Drogba and Torres to come on and influence the game.
One thing we all can agree on is the fact that for the first time since he arrived at Chelsea, the pressure is off Torres and it will be interesting to see how he responds. With the limelight being firmly placed on Costa and Drogba, Torres could find his feet and his goal scoring boots once again.
Fernando Torres will never give up and never stop working and I just wonder if this season will be very different to what we have seen before?
What do you people think?
