With the signing of Filipe Luis in the last few days, you would have to imagine that he has been brought into the club to start down the left hand side. If that's the case, who should start at right back?
It's an interesting question because as we all know Branislav Ivanovic had pretty much made the position his own over recent seasons despite stating in the past that his preferred position is as a centre back. If you then think of Cesar Azpilicueta and his performances at left back last season, it's going to be a tough decision!
You look at the comparison between the two and the difference in quality they have is obvious. Ivanovic is solid and great in the air, whereas Azpi is quick, mobile and will run for you all day long.
It really is a tough decision for the manager and in my opinion, the only way to decide between the two is down to how Mourinho intends for Chelsea to play this season. Chelsea are being installed as Premier League title favourites before bets are staked and games are played this season and Jose needs to ensure that he gets the best out of the players we have now.
Much of the criticism aimed at us last season was that we were weak in the wide areas defensively, or that we had no cover at times and became easily exposed in those areas. You only have to think back to Atletico Madrid at the Bridge last season to remember what happened.
Of course that led to players like Eden Hazard being openly criticised by the manager for not tracking back and some people don't like that. People see players like Hazard with so much potential and fantastic attacking flair and see it become partly stifled by the fact that he has to work hard in defensive areas. We would much rather see this happening and for the likes of Hazard and the other attacking midfielders to contribute to it.
They would much rather see him stay higher up the pitch and focus all of his effort in what he can do with the ball at his feet rather than what he does without it, which is fair comment.
I made an argument the other day for Chelsea to make the switch back to the much more solid 4-3-3 formation to take those issues away and I really believe that Jose Mourinho should consider the move, even more so because of the signing of Cesc Fabregas.
The role of the full backs in the modern game as changed over the years with the expectation being now that they contribute in attacking areas. If anything, the thing that frustrates me most about Ivanovic is he crossing ability when he gets in forward areas as it's not the best by far and I am sure plenty of you agree with me.
You stick him in the box to attack free kicks and corners and he is one of the better players so that will come into the managers thinking. Could we see Ivanovic feature more this season as a centre back as a result if Azpi gets the nod to start at right back over him?
Cesar Azpilicueta made a lasting impression on the manager last season, so much so the manager stated in an interview that he wished he "could have eleven Azpilicuetas!"
He works so hard all game closing people down or playing on the cover, spotting danger and coming across to win the ball or close people down. In attacking areas he could be so much more productive than Ivanovic and has already given a perfect example of that at Galatasaray away with his involvement in setting up Fernando Torres with a tap in to score!
It's such an intriguing situation we have now in defence this season. I cannot imagine any of us are 100% certain as to who WILL start the first game of the season.
Who do YOU want to see start at right back this season?
