It's being reported that John Mikel Obi is being offered by Chelsea for transfer for a fee of just £5m and if that is true I am amazed! Having featured in the World Cup for Nigeria recently £5m is ridiculous!
Mikel is one of those players that divides opinion of Chelsea fans all over the world. Some people love him, some people don't but that's football. I am in the corner of those that love and respect him as a player, I always have.
All the focus these days is on goalscorers or players with that attacking flair that make things happen, carve something literally out of nothing that can win you the game. It's almost as if those players that do the donkey work of the team are overshadowed but for me are just as important.
Think of Didier Deschamps and how he was described by Zidane as "The Water Carrier". Think of how Claude Makelele' changed the game with the position he played literally being named after him. That holding midfield position is so important.
OK, Nemanja Matic has come in and made the position his own and at the moment Oriol Romeu has returned to the club with interest from Valencia being spoken off before the window closes.
So what of Mikel? I personally still believe that he offers the manager something and is still the best defensive minded player we have in the midfield area. The difference between Matic and Mikel simply comes down to the use of the ball. This is where people criticise the Nigerian because the Serbian is so composed.
However, Mikel has the natural defensive instincts and more often than not, finds himself in the right place at the right time to break up play or win important tackles. You simply CANNOT put any price on that.
If this report (featured here) is true than it's scandalous and almost an insult to let him go for as little as that. Surely we should be looking for at least three times that amount!
What do you people think about Mikel and him being allowed to leave for as little as £5m?
