Forgotten man Oriol Romeu has signed a new contract to remain at Chelsea for the next five years. After watching his performance last night, it's great news for Chelsea!
As reported on here yesterday, it seems that John Mikel Obi is being offered to clubs for a transfer for a deal as cheap as £5m and I just wonder if that's because of Romeu's return?
Nemanja Matic is the main man in one of those holding midfield positions and it looks like Romeu is now in contention to fight for the other next to him with the likes of Marco Van Ginkel and Ramires.
Romeu has found it difficult in West London over the past few seasons. He spent the majority of the season on loan at Valencia last term and as a result, there had been reports that the Spanish side wanted to take him on a permanent deal.
Two seasons ago it had looked promising for Romeu as Roberto Di Matteo has spoken of him having more playing time following on from the departures of Raul Meireles and Michael Essien on loan. However, in late September 2012, Romeu suffered a terrible knee injury that kept him out for the remainder of the season.
So to last night and the pre season friendly against Wycombe. Romeu featured the longest out of everyone, playing 70 minutes and looked more than comfortable, almost as if he hadn't been away.
The first half he played alongside Marco Van Ginkel and the second half next to Nemanja Matic. Romeu is one of these players that makes the game look so simple and his use of the ball is good.
It seems that this season is Oriol's chance under Mourinho and let's hope he takes it with both hands!
What do you think of Romeu's new deal?
