As reported yesterday, Chelsea have reached an agreement with Atletico Madrid for the transfer of Filipe Luis and the left back is expected to agree personal terms quickly. As he comes in Patrick Van Aanholt has confirmed he wants to leave the club.
As usual at this club, there will be those people that champion the youngsters being given a chance here and rightly so. We all want to see someone come through the ranks and make their mark at the club but as time passes and more money comes into the game for those clubs that are successful, it seems that is never going to happen.
Money in the game is now almost astronomical and comes with a pressure to succeed. We all know what finishing inside the top four means these days. The game is so different to that of 10-15 years ago.
We have sat and watched Patrick Van Aanholt over time and despite the odd appearance here and there, never really being trusted to be thrown in at the deep end. It's last season, out on loan at Vitesse where he really made his mark as a first team regular week in, week out.
With Ashley Cole leaving after the emergence of Cesar Azpilicueta at left back, Ryan Bertrand has also seen his career come to a grinding halt. Some would argue that Bertrand and Van Aanholt could or should be battling it out for a start under Mourinho as his new options in that position but I am not so sure.
So, with Filipe Luis coming in and with Cesar Azpilicueta in the managers plans it now becomes a simple solution of both of them to leave the club. Van Aanholt looks like negotiating a deal to take him back to Holland with Feyenoord reportedly interested and Bertrand off to another Premier League club.
I guess that's just football these days isn't it and it is a real shame. The demands of success and the riches promised have changed the game forever for those clubs chasing title and top four glory season in, season out. Very few youngsters will be given chances to make their mark.
Expect both of our young left backs to leave the club before the end of the transfer window.
