Chelsea announced to the world yesterday that they had met the release clause in Diego Costa's contract with Atletico Madrid and an agreement has been reached for his transfer to West London. Now the deal is confirmed, I am wondering if you think he will be a success here?
Being honest, for me the jury is still out as I am not 100% convinced but that's just my opinion. You cannot argue with the goalscoring record for the past season but whether or not he can come to England and replicate that on a regular basis remains to be seen.
As with many others, Costa didn't have the best World Cup and never managed to score. His movement off the ball was good but after seeing problems with his temperament in the opening game, it was the only positive he can take from his time in Brazil.
Of course we have all seen the various goal compilations on YouTube and have sat and watched various games last season. Without question, he can finish and knows exactly where the goal is. He has demonstrated his strength and has the ability to literally "bully" defenders.
The problem I have is his temperament. Having numerous bust ups with defenders up and down the country in Spain when they seem to dish back what he is trying to dish out to them, for me it's a concern. The reason is because in England it will be even worse and coming to this country with a big reputation and being labelled as "The Beast" you can imagine he will become a target for defenders throughout the Premier League as they look to see what he is really made of and if he can handle it.
What I will say in Costa's defence is his ability. He can play the ball with both feet, is good in the air and is also deceivingly quick.
One thing we all agree on is the fact that Chelsea needed a new striker to shake things up. I just hope that Diego Costa proves to be the striker we have been looking for to complete another important piece of Jose Mourinho's puzzle!
I really, really hope he proves to be a success here!
