I cannot understand why people are surprised at England's defeat to Uruguay last night and to the first against Italy. Roy Hodgson's approach to our tactics are to blame and I tip England to lose to Costa Rica on Tuesday afternoon too!!
I will say one thing, if it wasn't for Gary Cahill, England would have been battered last night and what would the reaction have been then!
I am a firm believer in playing your players in their best positions. Can someone tell me if Wayne Rooney is a number ten or if he should be playing as the main striker?? Since when has Danny Sturridge (despite his constant moaning about being played there) been a number nine through the middle??
I said it on Twitter yesterday and I will say again here. Any England team that has faith in Jordan Henderson in midfield is in big trouble before a ball has been kicked.
Joe Hart couldn't really do alot with both goals last night so we can't really blame him.
Glen Johnson despite his willingness to win a 50/50 tackle to cross the ball into Rooney, is a total waste of space and can't defend to save his life.
Phil Jagielka was caught out of position and looked like he was struggling with the humidity and heat out there, looking leggy. Cahill bailed him out on numerous occasions.
Steve Gerrard isn't a deep lying midfielder. His game is about pressing forward and forcing the opposition onto the back foot. How many sideways passes can you make in one game?? As for his header that set up Suarez? Seeing that the Goalkeeper has punted the ball forward from in his own box and watching the flight of the ball from that moment, how on earth can you miss-time it and jump underneath the ball not making a solid and true connection??
Yet another costly mistake for England this time after the same for Liverpool allowing Demba Ba a run on goal to score.
Jordan Henderson although busy, had no end product and looks as always at this level, like a duck out of water.
Danny Wellbeck did OK but again is NOT a winger is he?? He could only do so much being played out of position. He worked hard enough but again hardly any end product from that area.
Raheem Sterling is someone you have watched this season and his game is all about pace and taking people on. Only three or four times did he attempt to do so and most of those time he succeeded. Most of the game was about taking two steps forward and then passing the ball backwards!
Wayne Rooney again being played out position was just a joke. He should be up top through the middle and the man that everything comes through. Whether it's to make a run in behind or to drop deep and link up with the two outside him or from midfield, Rooney's strengths were wasted again and not utilised!
Danny Sturridge was once again trying to be the star of the show when he should just concentrate on his football. He is such a greedy player trying shots from ridiculous angles and ignoring his team mates around him. Yes he scored plenty of goals for Liverpool this season but imagine if he became more of a team player like Suarez, he could become a world star.
When he wasn't diving on the floor looking for free kicks, Sturridge's best moments came from the deeper wider areas and not upfront, through the middle!!
England's play was too slow, too laboured and not direct enough. We had plenty of possession but did little with it. We had a period of 20-25 minutes in the second half when our choices were wrong or we lacked the final ball. To bring Rickie Lambert on for five minutes to try and nick a goal was pointless. The bloke hasn't had a kick in the two games so far and it was asking too much of him.
I personally believe that THIS should have been the England team that started the game last night:
Luke Shaw and James Milner to give us pace and energy down the wings. How many times did you actually see Uruguay give us problems from those areas last night?
Frank Lampard to sit and play the holding role because at least he would work hard in defensive areas and get stuck into tackles.
Gerrard and Jack Wilshere to push forward and create with the ball. Wilshere will also give you a willingness to work hard in that area without the ball too.
Sturridge wide left as he is naturally left footed and Sterling wide right to give us skill and pace down both sides with Rooney through the middle where is naturally gifted.
That is how we should have approached the game by grabbing the match by the scruff of the neck and taking the game to Uruguay.
You got it wrong Hodgson BIG TIME!! Resign now and do us all a favour!
