Another story that broke over the course of the last few days was confirmation from Chelsea and Belgian manager Marc Wilmots that Thibaut Courtois WILL be at Chelsea next season after spending three years in Madrid. I just wondered how you the Chelsea fan reading this, feels about the news and what you suggest happens now?
I wrote an article a couple of weeks ago stating that despite what he has achieved here and the part he has played in the most successful era of our history, it seems that Chelsea could be willing to sell Petr Cech.
The rumour has been more or less confirmed by Marc Wilmots speaking recently of Courtois. He was asked where he thought that the young Belgian Goalkeeper would play his football next season and if he came to Chelsea, what he believed would happen to Cech and responded by saying:
‘Yes, he will be returning to Chelsea this summer. Will they sell Cech? Yes, probably.’
There definitely seems to be a time of change at the Bridge as Mourinho looks to bring down the average age of our squad and invest in younger players.
Courtois is 22 years old and has the next ten to twelve years ahead of him. What is also important is the fact that Chelsea want to tie him down to a longer term contract but with two years left on his current deal, leaving him in Spain, there would be a danger of him having a year left with no experience of playing in the Premier League and refusing to sign a new deal.
It's a clever move from Chelsea and Mourinho. This way, Courtois plays a season here which hopefully would encourage him to sign a new deal.
I would be very, very surprised if Chelsea decide that they want to keep both players and have them fight it out for the number one spot in the team. Competition for places within a squad is always good because let's face it, Cech hasn't had that for years here and has had things his own way, however to go up against Courtois with the loser having to settle for a place on the bench? I just don't see that happening.
What do you people think of the fact that we know Courtois will be at Chelsea next season and the situation with Petr Cech?
