Chelsea and Jose Mourinho have been on the end of stinging criticism from all sorts of angles and people in the game of late because of our approach in certain games. This all came to a head at Anfield last week after beating Liverpool.
As we know, Chelsea were accused of "parking two buses" in front of goal and all sorts of ridiculous quotes and from that moment on, Chelsea have been battered!
Now as a Chelsea fan, and I have been saying this of late, I understand after the last two seasons that football is a results business. Chelsea had finished way off the title race and despite being back-to-back European Champions, our league form was not good enough!
It's clear looking back at our season that the defeat away to Stoke was the turning point of our season. Chelsea had looked to play an attacking style early in the season and at times it never worked. Stoke was the perfect example as Chelsea left themselves open at the back and were punished. Something had to change.
From that moment on, Jose changed the mentality of the team and worked on our defensive stability. As a result, Chelsea have kept 19 clean sheets out of 32 games and has seen Chelsea make a real challenge for the title.
When questioned of the change of approach, Jose said:
"I made the decision to stop that evolution in the style and philosophy of play and went in the direction where I felt it was the only way, with this team and these players, we could get results. I adapted. The team became more strategic and less intuitive from a certain point of the season because we went for results.
There was a moment that I felt this Premier League was so dangerous; that the big risk for every one of the big teams was to be out of the top four.
We built certain bases which we need to recover, especially when we have this little, little transformation and improvement in our squad that we need. We need to go back to these bases that we developed. Hopefully next season I will finally have the sense we are going to try and feel we can, but we'll still feel the danger of being out of the top four.
The difference from being champions and outside the top four is small. We had lots of matches, and long periods this season where we produced excellent football but we weren't the killer profile."
I personally do not have a problem with the change of approach this season and I wondering how many Chelsea fans reading this feel the same?
It became clear then and in certain games of late that Chelsea lack that real killer instinct in front of goal to see of teams such as Newcastle, West Ham, Villa, Palace and Sunderland and it's cost us. This is why we are looking to make signings such as Diego Costa to take that step forward.
The top four has always been our ultimate aim this season as Mourinho looks to come in, build the squad he wants and for the team to play in a style of his image. Once that begins to happen, we can make a real challenge for the title. I don't think any of us actually thought that we would win the Premier League this season after all did we?
So in answer to my own question and the whole point of this post, as a Chelsea fan, I have had no problems with our football and the fact that the result is the most important over performance.
What do you people think?
