It's sounds a stupid question really doesn't it after Bertrand has been here for literally years! Let's also not forget, Bertrand STARTED the Champions League Final in Munich!
The reason I am asking the question within this blog post is because of an interview published a short time ago. Bertrand as we know has spent the second half of the season out on loan at Aston Villa playing under Paul Lambert.
With regular Premier League football under his belt, he feels that he has done enough to warrant a place in the Chelsea first team especially now as Ashley Cole is being linked with a move away from the club once his contract has expired in a few weeks time.
Bertrand said:
"I'll go back to Chelsea in the summer and if they want me to play then that would be great. Should it be other options, I suppose the ball is in their court.
It's something we'll sit down and talk about in the summer. At this stage in my career I need to be playing. I don't want to be sat on the bench next season, so that is something we will discuss in the summer.
For me personally I feel I'm more than ready. I deserve the chance to play there consistently, having had the experiences that I have done under numerous managers.
I've learnt from some of the best players at the highest level. The likes of Didier, JT, Lamps, Ash directly in my position. I feel it's my time. I'm 24, I'm looking forward to getting settled for the first time.
I've had a taste of what it's like to be at the top, to win things. I've won the Champions League already. I've played for England a couple of times, in a crucial qualifying game (against Ukraine) as well.
Playing for your country is the pinnacle. To have that side of success and know what it takes, that's where I want to be, what I want to get more of.
The Champions League final is something I don't want people to forget, I've played at the highest level, had success at the highest level.
But, personally, I don't want to rest on my laurels, I've got the taste for it and it's something I want to actively pursue it. I want to get the taste for it again."
So what do you think of Bertrand and his chances under Mourinho, especially if Ashley Cole leaves?
To me Bertrand has the ability and the quality to succeed and really make the left back berth his own, well at least that was the case before the emergence of Cesar Azpilicueta this season. But, Bertrand has always seemed a little bit short or lacking the final polish to turn him from a good defender into a great one.
The problem is that he is only ever going to get that finish by playing games and it will be interesting to see what our manager thinks of his time at Villa.
Do you think Ryan Bertrand is right and deserves a chance under Mourinho next season?
