Jose Mourinho has revealed that he plans to wait until the World Cup is over before he looks at signing any new players and, that he has identified the targets he wants over the course of the season.
As we all know, Chelsea have been strongly linked with signing Diego Costa and Mario Mandzukic and some reports had stated that Chelsea had been looking to get these deals sorted out before the World Cup. In an open interview, Mourinho stated otherwise by saying:
"Since the market will be open until 31st August, like it is, I think it will be more of the same.
I think people (will) wait for the World Cup, wait for the first reaction of the first team, wait until after something happens.
At Chelsea, the manager is the same, the basic structure of the team is the same, we don't need the season to finish and the results of the season make the decisions about what we need and what we don't need.
Everything was done during the season, we knew perfectly what we wanted and I don't think we have huge work to do during the summer really."
Now it's always important to remember that Chelsea normally get their business done when no expects it. Everything is pretty much done and dusted and then announced so I wouldn't be surprised if something happens before the tournament starts.
If anything, I can see players who are likely to leave be the first signs of action we see coming out of Stamford Bridge before anyone comes in. Ashley Cole as we know is leaving when his contract expires along with Samuel Eto'o. David Luiz is being heavily linked with a move to Barcelona and Mikel with Inter Milan.
One part of his interview that intrigues me however is his comment that Chelsea do not have huge work to do this summer. We know that we need two strikers and a left back and as yet, it will be interesting to see if any of those positions will be filled with new signings or players returning from their loan spells away from the club.
What do you think of Mourinho's comments and the fact that targets are identified but nothing will happen until after the World Cup? Surely it makes sense to try and get these deals done sooner rather than later?
