Reports featured in the press have linked Chelsea with a sensational swoop to re-sign Portuguese Midfielder Tiago on a free transfer after his contract with Atletico Madrid expires on 1st July.
The summer ahead is an exciting time for Chelsea fans the world over as we sit and wait to see just who Jose Mourinho signs to kick start his planned second period of domination in the Premier League. As we have seen a whole host of names are being discussed and linked with the club but Tiago is a possible signing that intrigues me more than most.
So what of these reports and a possible move to re-sign Tiago? The footballing world has had to come to terms with the era of Financial Fair Play and as a result clubs are looking to balance their books.
A player with huge experience, someone who has been here before and won the Premier League with Chelsea under Jose Mourinho back in the 2004/5 season and at 33 years of age, a perfect option for Mourinho to have available.
It's obvious Tiago is a player the manager likes but in playing for Atletico and in this season more than ever, we have seen Tiago take more of a back seat and become the grafter in midfield, allowing others around him to create and craft.
In his first spell at the club, Chelsea under Mourinho played with a very different approach to what we play with now. Claude Makelele played the holding role as part of a three man midfield, allowing Frank Lampard and Tiago to play either side of the hard working Frenchman and with license to push forward.
Now, we play with two holding midfielders and the first choice is believed to be Ramires playing alongside Nemanja Matic next season. At present we have Mikel, Frank Lampard and Marco Van Ginkel as options to come in and cover but with Mikel being linked with a move away and Frank Lampard's contract talks seemingly delayed, it seems that Mourinho wants to make his move and get someone in sooner rather than later.
In my opinion, Tiago would be a short term signing to come in for a year or two and to help Mourinho as an option as he looks to mould a new foundation and a new core to lead the side through the next five, six or even seven seasons. Being able to bring him here as a free transfer would be an added bonus!
What do you people think of the link with Tiago? Do you think it would be good business to bring him back?
"He comes from Portugal, He hates the Arsenal! Tiago!"
