Chelsea defender to sign for Liverpool this summer?

According to various reports, following the emotional scenes at Stamford Bridge last Sunday, Ashley Cole is being targeted by Liverpool this summer on a free transfer once his Chelsea contract expires. Chelsea fans and Liverpool fans for that matter, how do you feel about that?

It's hard writing this post because a part of me feels that Ashley Cole has been such a wonderful servant to Chelsea during the most successful period in our history that he can literally do no wrong (on the pitch of course).

Ashley Cole will go down in history as a Legend at this club and arguably the best left back ever at Chelsea. Often criticised by away supporters, Arsenal fans for leaving them and England fans which I will never understand, there is little doubt that over the last ten years, he has been right up there with the best in the world his his position, if not the best in fact.

The problem is that football is continually evolving and especially life in the Premier League and England. Our game has become much more technical, more scientific and if anything much quicker and with all players reaching a certain age, they will find it harder to be able to compete at the top level.

So what of the link to Liverpool? Well first and foremost it leads to the question "Is he still good enough for the Premier League" and secondly "If Liverpool want to sign him, why are Chelsea considering letting him go?"

Without question his recent performances have been fantastic and it seems that all that time spent on the Chelsea bench and out of the side has re-ignited his hunger and desire to play football.

However, it's what happens over the course of a season and you cannot argue with the decision to play Cesar Azpilicueta ahead of him for the majority. The Spaniard has been outstanding and in my view, should be in the running for the player of the season awards here at Chelsea.

I guess it all comes down to pace with Cole. We have seen him being roasted a few times earlier in the season and I believe that's what cost him his place in the side. That could become the deciding factor in any potential suitors this summer.
