A massive congratulations to Gary Cahill and Frank Lampard for being named in the England squad for this summer's World Cup but Ashley Cole has been left out of the squad and as a result has announced his retirement from International Football.
A shoe-in for selection was Gary Cahill. Tonight at the Player of the Year awards, I expect Cahill to be up there in the running for one of the two major awards being Players Player of the Year and Player of the Year as his performances this season have been outstanding.
Cahill has made forty seven appearances for Chelsea in all competitions with the odd game as a substitute. Cahill has played a pivotal part in the best defence of the Premier League this season. He has scored two goals.
If England are to have any chance of progressing past the group stages of the competition, they will need Cahill to be at his best as he has all season. Congratulations Gaz!
For some people the inclusion of Frank Lampard will be a surprise considering as yet, no new contract has been offered by Chelsea to keep him at Stamford Bridge for another season.
Frank Lampard always knew that this term more than ever, he wouldn't be one of the first names on the managers team sheet, week in, week out and would have to settle to be part of rotation. As far as I can see, Lampard has had no issues with that and whenever he has played, has always given his best.
Lampard has adapted to a deeper role as he has got older and still produces effective displays for Chelsea here and in Europe. Let's also not forget that our record goalscorer has weighed in with six goals this season from forty appearances in all competitions, eight as a substitute.
I expect Lampard to have the same role with England and will be used for the masses of experience he has to help the younger generation out there.
Congratulations Frank! What better swansong for England than the World Cup!
It's a photo that says it all really as within the last 24 hours, it's become clear that Leighton Baines has taken over the mantle from Ashley Cole for England. The news has been confirmed that Cole has missed out on the World Cup making way for Baines and Southampton's Luke Shaw and as a result has called time on his International Career.
Ashley Cole is in fifth place in the all time appearance listings for England and is as a defender features second in the list to England's World Cup winning Captain Bobby Moore. His record is outstanding.
However, there is no denying that this season has become a turning point in his career with England and as it seems at Chelsea.
Having lost his place in the team, Cole has only featured in the last few weeks while Cesar Azpilicueta has taken his chance to play at left back and made the position his own.
Cole has made just twenty five appearances for Chelsea this season in all competitions with two as a substitute.
Ashley Cole does not get the recognition he deserves with England and today is a sad day. I personally would have taken him in place of the 18-year old Luke Shaw albeit as backup to Leighton Baines as I see Cole as a better defender than the other two but it just wasn't to be.
What do you people think about the call up for Cahill and Lampard and with what's happened with Ashley Cole?
