As to be expected, despite Jose Mourinho's tactical genius and despite the Chelsea players delivering THE perfect performance at Anfield, some sections of the media and written press have labelled Chelsea's tactics as "Anti Football". Has everyone forgotten that football is a results business now?
For example, If someone had offered the Liverpool players and supporters a 1-0 win against Chelsea, putting them in the driving seat for the Premier League title, before a ball was kicked yesterday no matter how the team played, do you think they would have taken it? Of course they would have!!
Again, do you really think that the Real Madrid supporters and the media in Spain were upset and pissed off at the approach Carlo Ancelotti and his team had to the game against Bayern Munich the other night? Of course not! They set up in a defensive shape, looking to hit Bayern on the counter attack and their approach gave them a 1-0 advantage into the game tomorrow night!
All this talk of Anti Football is bullshit, it's the way the game has to be at different stages of the season if you want to be in with a shout of silverware at the end of the season.
Brendan Rogers and Liverpool have needed to change their approach at times this season to have really nailed the Premier League. It's all well and good moaning about Chelsea's tactics yesterday but you need to come up with a "Plan B" when it doesn't work!
This is where Chelsea have shot themselves in the foot this season. When teams have come to Stamford Bridge and set up the same way as we did against Liverpool at Anfield, WE have struggled to break them down. Teams that have done that against us no matter where we have played them have caused us problems, just look at Aston Villa, West Ham, West Brom , Crystal Palace and Sunderland. All teams we have dropped points against.
When those teams have picked up points or victories against us, they have been praised for their approach and rightly so. We all play the game to win and if you fail to break your opponent down then you are just as much to blame as the opposition for stopping you!
The thing that really gets me is all this bollocks being spoken about how Mourinho likes to play defensive football, unattractive football and he has taken the flair out of Chelsea! Just look at Arsenal at home and the performance that day as we blew them away winning 6-0.
This Chelsea team has stumbled against the sides I have mentioned before but, more often than not, have proven themselves to be what is required on any given day. We can set up to attack teams or we can set up to play a defensive game, looking to contain the opposition and then hurt them on the break as we have done against both Manchester City and Liverpool this season.
I personally do not believe that Liverpool OR Manchester City have the flexibility in their game to be able to do that. Let's face it, if Chelsea had beaten those lesser sides with the record we have against the top four, we would be well clear at the top of the table. It's only because we have dropped points that one of those two will win the Premier League now. My money is on Manchester City.
Anti Football, Negative Football, call it what you like. I call it three points at Anfield!
putting 10 men behind the ball is not tactical genius, a fellow Chelsea fan
