Andre Schurrle's devastating hat-trick against Fulham last weekend has opened debate for all of us ahead of Tottenham this Saturday. Has he given Jose Mourinho a real problem?
Let's be honest, Schurrle although spent a time missing with injury, has played a bit part in Chelsea's run of thirteen Premier League games unbeaten that has seen us sit four points clear of second place. Schurrle had only made the odd substitute appearance here and there but nothing of real note.
If anything, his first half performance with the rest of the team against Fulham was woeful and quite a few Chelsea fans had said they would have substituted him at half time. What happened in the next 45 minutes has without question, given Jose Mourinho something to consider.
I know that Eden Hazard stepped up his game and carried the rest of the side forward with his performance but it was his link up play with Schurrle on the other side that really caught the eye.
Speaking after the game Schurrle spoke of his partnership with Hazard and said:
"When I play on the right wing and he plays on the left it's perfect because I know he can take on two or three people and beat them.
When I start my run he already knows that I'm running and he has the quality to make the pass to me.
That's what we did two times, he made two perfect passes, and the third from Fernando was very good.
Eden a great player, everybody knows it, and he was brilliant."
He is right and looking at those first two goals, they looked to have a fantastic understanding. You have to question if Oscar or Willian would have made the same run if they had been asked to play there.
That's where the whole point of this post is leading to, surely Schurrle starts on the opposite side to Hazard against Tottenham? It would be hard to drop someone to the bench after scoring a hat-trick so who misses out?
As we saw on Saturday, Willian was put on the bench and Oscar played through the middle. The thing is, right now, Willian is far more effective than Oscar has been in recent weeks. His industry alone puts him ahead of his Brazilian compatriot in my eyes.
Apart from Mohamed Salah, Schurrle is the other natural winger in the side if you forget Eden Hazard for a moment because his place in the team is nailed on.
Salah is still some way off and if memory serves me correct, he never even made the bench for Fulham. It will be interesting to see if he is available this weekend.
Schurrle gives Mourinho a much better balance playing out wide and as we have all seen, is willing to work hard. Added to that, his goals and the runs he makes off the ball and he has to start the next game.
So what happens in the number ten role? Will Jose Mourinho stick with Oscar who has been his preferred player in that role all season long or will he go with Willian?
In my opinion, I would make the one change - Willian in for Oscar with Hazard wide left and Schurrle on the right.
What do you people think? Has Andre Schurrle's performance and link up play with Eden Hazard forced Jose Mourinho's hand ahead of this weekend and could we see Oscar dropped in favour of Willian?
I agree, we need to give a chance to Schuurle, he made a very good match last week. Futhermore, Oscar seems to be tired, he need a pause, or game later in the game against the spurs.
ReplyDeletei also think so . but i think jose should have given salah a chance in the fa cup because since his arrival he played just a few minutes. You couldn't really show his talent
ReplyDeleteChelsea is out of the FA Cup. Guess we will see more of Salah next season!
DeleteI'd play Schurrle but not at the expense of William or Oscar; I'd put him up front in preference to any of Torres/Eto'o/Ba. Then again I might just leave it to Mourinho, he seems to know a bit about the game.
