As Chelsea fans, we often sit and read speculation about potential signings on pretty much a daily basis. I am pleased to report this evening that the club has made the first moves to tie down two of our existing players to new contracts for next season and beyond - John Terry and Eden Hazard.
From a legend at this club and someone who will go down in history as our most successful captain (to date) to someone who quite simply has the world at his feet, it's great news that these negotiations have started.
John Terry:
What can you say about JT this season? Everything really compared to last. Rafa Benitez tried his best to break his spirit last season but JT held firm. Rafa "The Gaffer" stated that Terry was injured and not fit enough to be in contention to start games and those claims were refuted by JT. It almost seemed as though Rafa was doing his best to cause trouble for our inspirational leader.
This season, under Mourinho once again, JT has played in all but two league games so far this season and has become a vital part of our back four. Alongside Gary Cahill, JT has formed a partnership working alongside Branislav Ivanovic and Cesar Azpilicueta to become the best defensive unit in the Premier League.
I have said it before but without him in the side, we look a different outfit at the back and lack his leadership qualities. Forever talking and organising his defence to offering advice and encouragement on the pitch, JT has been back to his resolute best.
With his contract expiring at the end of the current season, it was always going to be based on how he would perform on the pitch this term that would indicate whether or not Mourinho felt he was the same player he had here previously. His pace may not be the same but he more than makes up for it with his positional awareness.
Terry was open and honest earlier in the season and admitted that the manager had said to him there would be "no favourites" and everyone must work hard to earn their place. JT has delivered and now it seems that Mourinho has called for the club to reward him with a new deal.
Eden Hazard:
Reports first appeared yesterday afternoon that Chelsea have been planning to re-negotiate Hazard's contract with a view to tying him down for longer at the club. This has happened because the Belgian has flourished this season under Mourinho.
It always takes foreign players who are not used to playing in England some time to come to terms with the pace and power of our game. Last season although impressive has been nothing compared to what we have seen from Hazard this term.
Being spoken of as a future Ballon D'or winner, Hazard has the world at his feet. Talking recently of being compared to the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi, Hazard has some big targets ahead of him and I guess only time will tell whether or not he can make it that far.
This season he has been outstanding and has virtually won games and turned the outcome of games on his own. Now whether or not because of the absence of Juan Mata and with the Spaniard's influence in games as the main man being taken away, Hazard has picked up the baton and has become a real driving force for Chelsea.
Back to these reports that have surfaced and it seems that the club is willing to make him the highest paid player on reported wages of around £200,000 per week. It's a move that is designed to keep the big European clubs at bay, teams such as Real Madrid who have Hazard's idol Zidane on the coaching staff.
A personally believe that the club should give Hazard whatever he wants because he will become a major world star and right up there with Messi and Ronaldo.
I personally believe it's great news that the club are looking to get these two deals done for next season and beyond. What do you people think?
