Frank Lampard's Chelsea contract is due to expire at the end of the season. Reports state that Chelsea wish to offer him an additional years contract including a coaching role in a bid to keep him here but, it's believed that he is being offered a contract worth £4m a season to join the MLS!
I am of the opinion that at Villa Park last season, Frank Lampard's whole outlook on his football changed and we see a very different and laid back player under Jose Mourinho this season.
Playing under Benitez and not knowing whether or not he would be able to finally break Bobby Tambling's long standard goalscoring record at the club, Lampard scored the two goals that equalled and then surpassed Tambling to become a record breaker.
You could see the relief and the joy at what he had achieved personally. Lampard has achieved so much here as part of the most successful Chelsea era in history, winning literally everything but for him to become our record goalscorer meant everything to arguably, our greatest ever player.
Being honest, I expected Lampard to wind his career here down and leave on the high of winning the Europa League but, to our surprise, Jose Mourinho managed to convince both Chelsea and Lampard to sign a new deal.
There had been reports that an offer was on the table from L.A Galaxy towards the end of last season and it was under serious consideration. That was before Mourinho became involved and Lampard extended his contract here.
Now this season we have reached the same situation and once again it's being reported that L.A Galaxy have upped their offer to £4m per season to take him over the Atlantic to America.
It's at this point that we have to consider whether or not Lampard would want to make the move into coaching or take his final pay day before he decides to retire?
I personally believe that there will more than likely always be a place for Lampard here at Chelsea in one form or another. Whether that will be as part of our coaching staff is yet to be seen so it would all come down to how Lampard feels within himself.
Of course I would like to see the club invest in people like Lampard to work in the Academy to provide his knowledge and experience to our youngsters because let's face it, it's just as important to invest in the clubs future as it is to invest in the playing squad.
I just wonder though if there reports are correct, if £4m is just too much to turn down?
