Thibaut Courtois has been the subject of intense speculation in Spain in recent days as claims were made in their national press that a pre contract agreement had been signed with Real Madrid. Courtois has denied those claims but his future still remains unclear.
Now this was all started at the weekend by a Spanish Radio show who claimed that an agreement was in place for the player to join Madrid when his contract expires in 2016. Then, as a result, the Spanish Newspaper AS picked up on these reports and claimed that Chelsea were ready to sell the young Belgian for a reported 30 million euros this summer to fund potential moves by Jose Mourinho elsewhere.
In his defence and quickly, Courtois and even his father who acts as his agent have both come out and denied any agreements being made and have stated that his future still lies with Chelsea.
Courtois said:
“It is totally false. I have not been able to say anything like that to Miguel Angel Gil, because it is not true. I have no agreement with any club. Everyone knows I have a contract with Chelsea and that I am happy at Atletico.”
Now being honest and looking from the outside in when asked about his situation, I haven't a clue what is going to happen. With his contract running until 2016, Chelsea can still afford to send him back to Atletico for another season next term.
Petr Cech, despite the odd soft goal and mistake, has had an impressive season. Cech with the back four have conceded just four goals in our last fourteen Premier League games that has seen us move clear at top of the league. You have to imagine that Jose Mourinho still sees the big Goalkeeper as part of his plans for next season.
We have read report and speculation about Courtois ever since he has made an impact in La Liga. Just recently I was reading reports that he would be returning to Stamford Bridge to take up a straight fight with Cech for a starting position in the first team. I cannot see that happening personally for at least one more season.
Then we look at the title race in La Liga and Courtois father believes that it's simply one club trying to destabilise each other as things begin to heat up over there.
Thierry Courtois said:
“It is an attempt to destabilise Atletico. There has been no contact with Real. Our negotiations with Chelsea still have to start. And Chelsea would never let him go that way, when his contract has expired. Thibaut is now focused on the season with Atletico and the Champions League.”
Whatever the situation, I am still unclear on the future of Courtois at Chelsea. What do you think of it all? Do you think he will be here next season in a straight battle with Petr Cech, or like me, you believe he will spend another season with Atletico?
One thing is for certain, if Chelsea decide to cash in on him to fund other moves in the transfer market elsewhere (Diego Costa), he would command a substantial fee that would diminish this time next year.
