As always, we always look forward to hearing what Jose Mourinho has to say in his press conference ahead of games and yesterday was no different.
After a disappointing result against Sunderland and comments made by Mourinho immediately afterwards, stating that we might have to change to a more defensive approach, I have asked the question about our formation and whether or not we should stop rotating the players and stick with our best eleven.
When asked about the a possible change to our current formation, Jose said:
“You don’t need to change formation to think of the game in a different way. We have to try to improve certain aspects of our game.
We can improve our results by having more security when we lose possession of the ball, because at this moment we are not punishing opponents by scoring more.
One of the aspects we need to improve is the defensive work of the attacking players who are in the team.
It is the responsibility of all players, when the team loses the ball, to be – I won’t say more committed, because that’s not the right word, they are committed – but to change their brain a little bit.
To be a team that plays very good football is an important step. To be a team that plays good football and wins a lot of matches is a more difficult step.
That step is only possible when that offensive team defends very well when it doesn’t have possession of the ball.
Some players that are used to playing with the ball at their feet and are very comfortable in the offensive phase when the team possesses the ball, they have to also be very comfortable without the ball.”Jose Mourinho went on to add that on Friday morning, the ONLY work he did in training with the team was on the defensive aspects of the game. That's excellent news as far as I am concerned!
We haven't been solid have we! We have conceded stupid goals in games and that's the problem that has remained constant throughout the season.
The Sunderland game was a perfect example. We dominate the game, go a goal up and couldn't kill off our opponents with that second or third goal. As a result, the opposition remains in the game. The majority of us must have felt the same as the game went on. Sunderland took heart from the fact that they had survived the chances missed and attacked us and scored twice!
I have said it in a previous article but will say it again here. For any successful side, you need a solid base to build from. Once you have that, then you always give yourselves a chance.
As for the attacking players and Jose Mourinho's comments about their work off the ball, it's the same story as has been all season long and there is nothing new there.
Chelsea are in transition and are a work in progress and eventually it WILL click into place and all come together but for now, any improvement in the defensive aspect of our performance would be a start!
