Chelsea beat Aston Villa 2-1 last night with an own goal from Luna and the winner from Branislav Ivanovic after Christian Benteke had equalised for Villa. It was an unconvincing performance from Chelsea but a win is a win at the end of the day despite the fact it WAS harsh on Aston Villa.
We have to remember that we are at the start of the season and everyone is trying to find their feet, to get match fitness and to then kick on from there. Chelsea has won both games and sit top of the league with six points and that's all that matters before we head to Old Trafford.
Yes we could have played better in the second half against Hull and played better last night but we still managed to grind out the win against a much, much better Villa side than they were last season.
No disrespect to Hull when I say this but we always knew Villa would give us a tougher test as an established Premier League side.
Paul Lambert took stick from all quarters last season but stuck to his guns, continued to build a young talented side than needed time to gel and he will reap the rewards this season after working under immense pressure last time around.
Lambert has put together a young, hard working side willing to fight for each other and for him. To me that's half the battle won and with Christian Benteke up front, who in my view is one of the most impressive players in the League, they will always cause anyone problems at some stages in the game.
You only have to look at the highlights above to see the amount of close calls we had and chances we conceded to Villa. They have every right to feel aggrieved about the Ivanovic and JT penalty calls by the Referee. Admit it, we wouldn't have been surprised if those decisions were given the other way. They weren't and we have to move on.
There is plenty to work on before Chelsea are anywhere near being the finished article and this will take time. The positives from the game are there to see. Eden Hazard is a constant threat along with Oscar, always looking to probe and to create chances. JT and Frank Lampard have both settled well into the side again after an in and out season last term. Demba Ba remains a worry and I will admit to being surprised to see him start ahead of Lukaku last night.
I could sit here and over analyse things but it's far to early to do so. Chelsea under Mourinho is a work in progress and given time, we will build on our performances and improve. Two important wins have given us a good start and we must look to up our game against United on Monday night.
As for Villa, They should have little concerns about relegation this season and should remain confident of finishing well inside the top half of the table this time around. I like what Lambert is doing there and if he can keep hold of Benteke for the season, they have a chance to push on from there.
Let's look forward to United on Monday night and a much better performance from the blues!
