As the season finished back in May, every single Chelsea supporter no matter where they are in the world would of had an opinion of where they felt Chelsea needed to strengthen for the new season this term.
I am looking at Chelsea's summer transfer business so far in detail here and I would like to ask your opinion on a few things. This post is about players who have been brought into the squad or have come back from loan to become an established part of Chelsea's first team squad next season.
(This does not include the likes of Nathaniel Chalobah, Tomas Kalas or Josh McEachran as I believe these three will spend another season on loan to continue their development.)
Since last season finished on a high and Jose Mourinho was appointed as our manager once again, plans have been in place to strengthen the squad in key areas. With the departure of Ross Turnbull and Hilario yet to find out if he will get a new deal, the Goalkeeping position was an obvious need to strengthen. Mark Schwarzer has been signed.
Paulo Ferreira has been released after his contract expired and Wallace has joined up with the squad for pre season. Whether or not he will stay here or to be loaned out is yet to be seen.
It's my view that it's a real shame that Oriol Romeu was allowed to leave on loan to Valencia for the season. I just think that Romeu gives us a different option in the holding position but in saying that, a fully fit Michael Essien has been brought back to the club to take his place. Whether he stays fit for the season is another thing!
Yossi Benayoun was next to leave the club and his place in midfield has been taken by Marko Van Ginkel who to me already looks like a better option after just a few weeks.
Finally, Romelu Lukaku who had such an excellent season has returned to Chelsea this pre season and take his place next to Fernando Torres and Demba Ba.
So what do you think of our transfer business so far? Have Chelsea done well to bring in the replacements we have? If Rooney is added to the squad, I personally believe that Demba Ba will be allowed to leave but we will have to wait and see.
As I stated at the beginning of this post, Jose Mourinho has said on record that Wayne Rooney is his only other transfer target this summer. If he is unable to sign him for any reason, would he be happy with what he has and as a Chelsea supporter, would YOU be happy with our current squad?
I would love to hear your opinions.
