Through this series of articles i will be giving information on the academy players that will be players to watch for in the coming season. In most cases these will be players that will more than likely go on loan, they are also the players that i think will have the biggest impact whilst out on loan, hopefully in a similar vein to Nathaniel Chalobah has done this season.
Lewis Baker is an 18 year old midfielder and will not turn 19 until April of next year. He is player that can play anywhere throughout the midfield. His best role in my opinion is in the number 10 role behind the forward where he is able to dictate our attacking play using his football ability and vision to make things happen for us. However he can play very capably in all the other midfield roles and was used a lot the past season during the youth cup run as one of the 2 deep midfielders but he can also very easily play out wide on one of the wings.
Capable with both feet Lewis Baker is a unique type of player for an English player, his close control is fantastic and he has the vision to get out of tight spaces and find the right ball to launch quick attacks. However the skill is not his only asset as he is more than capable of getting stuck in when needed and he will always give 100% for the team which is what you look for in a captain which is why Lewis was captain throughout both the FA Youth Cup and NextGen series competitions last season
In the coming season Lewis Baker will be looking to really push on and he will very likely go out on loan. His ability on the ball and that he can also cope with the physical side of the game should see him able to compete at Championship level. The past season Nathan Ake won young player of the year at the Chelsea awards but for me Lewis Baker has been the best player this season, he is such an influence on games and when he is in full flow and everything is clicking the team he is playing in plays to a high standard also.
In a similar way to Frank Lampard he has a knack of getting into the box at the right time and take up the right positions to score crucial goals. He can also score scorching goals from the outside of the box. Lethal from the penalty spot as well as from free kicks Lewis Baker is most certianly a goal threat for any team that he plays in, here is a video highlighting the best of what Lewis Baker has done at Chelsea FC so far:
