Frank Lampard scored his 202nd and 203rd goal of an incredible Chelsea career to surpass the great Bobby Tambling's long standing record and virtually secured the Blues a top four finish.
It didn't go according to plan to start with for Rafa Benitez's side however, the hosts were 1-0 up after just 14 minutes. Villa's player of the season Christian Benteke grabbed his 19th goal of the season after after a great individual run before calmly beating Petr Cech.
It got even worse for Chelsea just before the break, with Ramires being given his marching orders after picking up two yellow cards from referee Lee Mason.
Things were looking bleak at half-time for the Blues but they emerged a different side after the break.
Villa were reduced to ten men as well not long after the restart, with Benteke turning from hero-to-zero for picking up his second yellow card of the day.
The hosts looked lost without their talisman and Chelsea took full advantage of this.
Cue Frank Lampard to fire the Blues level with a wonderful curling effort that whizzed in to Brad Guzan's top right hand corner on the hour mark. It was the midfielder's 202nd Chelsea goal and it took him level with Bobby Tambling's record for club goals.
He would have to wait until the 87th minute of the tie to get his 203rd, after some good work from Eden Hazard down the left hand side before squaring for Lampard to apply a 'classic Frank' finish. Cue pandemonium. The midfielder dropped to his knees in front of the travelling Chelsea support before being mobbed by his teammates.
Chelsea finished the game with nine men however, after Hazard was forced off with a knock with no more substitutions left.
A vital three points for Chelsea who go to Amsterdam on Wednesday knowing they are all but confirmed for next year's Champion's League.
