This week at the Chelsea academy there was mixed results but on the whole it was definitely a positive week.
It started with a 1 - 0 away defeat at the hands of Manchester United, the game was pretty even throughout with both teams exchanging the upper hand throughout. The game was eventually decided by a mistake by goalkeeper Ben Killip, a simple back pass rolled back to him seemed to go straight through his foot and into the back of the net, certainly not the type of goal that should have decided the game. It was a mixed team for this game with some experience in the form of Alex Davey and Ruben Loftus-Cheek along with a number of younger regulars. A new name to the line up was Kasey Palmer who has joined up from Charlton. This was a 5th straight defeat in the league now for the U18's but with the squad spread thin through the U21's, NextGen U19's, Youth Cup and U18's league team it is not a suprise that results have not gone as well.
The U21's finally got the win they were looking week away to Sunderland, again the team was a mixture of younger players and players who are older and according to Dermot Drummy's post match report some of those older players will be moved on in the summer. Not one of those is Milan Lalkovic who according to his Twitter account will not be moving on in the summer and would mean he will be offered a new deal. The game was a good one with both sides having their chances to win but the game was finally decided by Connor Hunte who was put through by John Swift, the keeper will have felt he should have done better but the goal was still well taken by Hunte, here are the highlights:
The big game of the week was of course the first leg of the FA Youth Cup semi final against Liverpool at Anfield. The game was always going to be a good one and so it proved, Chelsea played the possession game early on without really getting anywhere and then it was the turn of Liverpool to exert their influence on the game having the better of the chances in the first half. As we have seen with this young Chelsea team though they were always likely to play better in the second half and that they did really dominating the second half of the game.
For a lot of the time it seemed like the game would end up goalless but a deflected Lewis Baker shot fell to Alex Kiwomya who took it down nicely and fired home from 8 yards out to give a very good advantage to the away side, however things were not yet finished and when Jeremie Boga ran through the Liverpool defence it would seem that he would have a shot on goal but he slid it through to Alex Kiwomya who again fired home with a very tidy finish and gave the blues an even better advantage for the second leg.
Once again this team showed all the qualities of real top players who are at the top of their game at this level, having should have won the NextGen series now they are in a very strong position to go into and hopefully win the Youth Cup. Here are the highlights of the game:
