Seven year old Chelsea fan needs life-saving radiotherapy from Boston

UK: Wednesday 17 April 2013: Chelsea supporter, Alex Novakovic from Aylesbury has only two weeks left to raise £220,000 for life-saving radiotherapy to cure a stage four brain tumour – the specific treatment he needs to survive is only available in a few countries around the world, but due to its high demand, availability for treatment with these machines is in short supply

The seven year old and his family’s lives were flipped upside down on 15 November 2012 at 18:00 when the young school boy collapsed at his dinner table after complaints of feeling unwell. He was rushed to Stoke Madeville Hospital for a MRI scan which revealed lesions on his brain.

Alex was then immediately rushed to John Radcliff Hospital in Oxford and seven days later, he was diagnosed with medulloblastoma – a malignant brain tumour that had broken up and travelled down his spine. The young boy was given two weeks to live, but has fought hard and is not giving up.

Young Alex has undergone many tests, surgeries and chemotherapy – each has bought him time, but now time is running out and his only hope of survival rests on proton radiotherapy which creates little to no collateral damage to other organs, tissue and bone structure compared to the traditional forms of radiotherapy available in the UK.

The treatment Alex needs to save his life has been offered by The Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, USA, and is not available on the NHS. Alex’s family has been in contact with the hospital and shared all of the youngster’s case history. The hospital confirmed he would be an excellent candidate for the proton beam therapy due to his successful response to chemo with every chance of a cure.

The only thing standing in Alex’s way is the cost of the procedure which stands at £225,000 – the fundraising starts today, and he already has the support of the local community, family and friends – now his parents are looking for public support to help them get the treatment their son needs to survive and keep Alex and his three sisters together.
