I sit here this morning still shaking my head at the whole Luis Suarez situation but also at the two points dropped yesterday. Why did we drop two points? It's a combination of factors that leave a sour taste on the mouth and it's tough to take this time, it really is.
Unfortunately we have come away from the game with more questions than answers and it's something that needs to be addressed once again. Of course the Referring performance was a disgrace and I will never understand how Liverpool finished the game with eleven players on the pitch.
How Jamie Carragher stayed on the pitch, How Danny Sturridge never got booked for his challenge on Ryan Bertrand, how the Referee AND the Linesman missed the Suarez bite on Ivanovic despite the fact that even afterwards, Ivanovic showed him the bite mark on his arm and last but not least where he got SIX minutes of added time from?
At Anfield, you are always up against it but when things like that go against you it makes it ten times harder but in saying that, it's not just his fault. Rafa Benitez AND the Chelsea players caused their own problems and this is where we are at this season.
After a slow start, we managed to get a goal up from an unlikely source in the air. A Juan Mata corner was met unmarked at the near post by Oscar who headed into the corner with Reina beaten. Chelsea were a goal up and went into half time with something to protect, to regroup and focus on the job required in the second half.
Chelsea were chasing shadows for ten minutes at the start of the second half and did well to regroup after conceding the equaliser. The ball to Sturridge was different class and there is nothing you can do about that goal.
Like I said, after about ten minutes or so we calmed down and began to knock the ball about again. Another incident that went unnoticed was in the build up to Chelsea's second goal. Juan Mata was caught late after the ball had gone and the Ref played advantage as we forced a corner. Nothing happened, no reaction, no yellow card.
Luckily for us, Juan Mata picked himself up and took the corner that led to the penalty but once again I have a question about the penalty incident. If you look at the moment Suarez handles the ball in the box, Fernando Torres is right behind him and about to head the ball goal wards. Isn't that a goalscoring opportunity? Hasn't Suarez denied Torres of the same and as a result he should have been awarded a red card not just a yellow?
Hazard stepped up and scored and we were back in front with over half an hour to go in the game and if anything, you would expect Liverpool to come at us as they chase the equaliser.
Now this is where I cannot understand the people that continue to defend Rafa Benitez. At that moment, on 57 minutes, we should be looking to make a change to PROTECT our lead as we know that Liverpool will be coming at us at every opportunity.
If you ask me, at this point, I would have taken Oscar off and brought on Frank Lampard for his experience moving Ramires out wide for his legs and energy to protect our right hand side. Depending on how things went I would also look to bring John Terry on as an extra defender to be the voice to organise things as Liverpool attack us at every opportunity.
I cannot understand how we never make changes to protect our lead in games this season and the three points and how many times we have suffered. Why can't we get a game won or at least an advantage in games and then see those games out?
I cannot understand how he firstly takes off Eden Hazard who remains a threat to Liverpool. With him being on the pitch, he gives Liverpool something to think about. To take him off like he did at Manchester City was wrong. The fact that he brings on Yossi Benayoun is something I will NEVER understand! How does he protect a lead? What can he bring to the side in that position that is better than Hazard? Why not bring on Lampard at that stage and change our shape?
Then Oscar picks up a knock and has to come off with around ten minutes to go and once again we make a like for like change and not something defensive as Moses comes on!
Finally, he takes off Juan Mata for Frank Lampard with John Terry sitting there unused on the bench once again. Just like Reading and City away, John Terry never comes off the bench!
Chelsea then caused their own problems as the game moved into injury time. Rather than to try and keep hold of the ball and to try and get out of our own half, we continue to lump the ball up the pitch and give possession back to Liverpool when we needed to try and waste time!
Our marking for the second goal leaves alot to be desired as both Luiz AND Ivanovic get caught ball watching but in saying that, we should never had allowed Sturridge to take a second and third touch unchallenged before he played the ball in either!.
It's another two points dropped from a winning position and that's been the story of our season so far. We now sit behind Arsenal with a game in hand but with Tottenham just a point behind us now. It really could have been so much better.
The Luis Suarez incident is making all the headlines at the moment and rightly so but once again as a Chelsea fan there are plenty of other questions that should be answered. I wish someone "upstairs" would approach Benitez at Cobham today and ask him to explain some of his decisions because I for one can't understand them!
From Suarez to Benitez and the Referee, Chelsea's top four aspirations take a hit once again!
