It's being reported everywhere now so it must have substance! Chelsea have "agreed" a deal AND personal terms to bring Andre Schurrle to Stamford Bridge next season in a deal worth around £20m. I am asking you the Chelsea fan reading this, what you think about the signing and the fact that without the manager for next season being installed, if Roman still will not relinquish control?
I know little about Schurrle if I am being totally honest here. I am aware of him purely based on reports in the media and the You Tube video compilations I have watched.
Based on that evidence, Schurrle is an attacking midfielder who naturally plays from the left hand side as an inside forward and thrived in the past in a 4-3-3 formation.
This season, playing on the left for Leverkusen, Schurrle has scored nine times with five assists to his name which is impressive. It's his sprinting ability and stamina that has caught the attention of the European Scouts and has been a key part of his game this season.
Now this leads me to question whether or not we could have another Romelu Lukaku situation on our hands here? Read my last post on Kevin De Bruyne, he has been performing in the same league this season, with similar figures and is already on our books so why would we look to splash out another £20m on a player who would struggle to command a first team start with Eden Hazard in front of him?
Without question in recent seasons, it's become obvious that Chelsea are searching across Europe and beyond for top talent as we look to build a new team that will form the second coming of Chelsea under Abramovich but we have to be realistic.
Lukaku came in, worked hard and being honest hardly got a chance. When he did, he was played out of position and struggled to make an impact. As a result, he has now playing his football on loan at West Brom in his favourite position and has thrived from it.
Would another mega bucks deal for Schurrle end up in the same situation? I think it could do and still believe we should stick with De Bruyne.
As for the deal itself? Is this another sign of Roman Abramovich refusing to relinquish control over the clubs transfer policy and to continue with a policy of "Here's someone else I have bought for you to use"?
With rumours that Jose Mourinho was to come back and part of a possible deal being him having total control over transfers, is this a sign that Mourinho and Abramovich giving up control simply not going to happen? Or, is Schurrle a Mourinho signing?
One thing is for sure, we need balance in the squad. With Hazard and De Bruyne on our books, we have two naturally gifted players who can play wide left, in the attacking three in behind the striker or as an inside forward.
Why on earth do we need to sign another one?
