John Terry has leapt to the defence of Fernando Torres and has re-iterated the fact that the players and supporters are right behind him and always will be and it leads me to ask you all the question:
Was Thursday night against Steaua a turning point? We all saw the performance of Torres against Steaua. It was impressive and as always he works his socks off. The problem we have had with Torres is that he has done that in virtually every game he plays but hasn't scored or even looked like doing so. If anything, he looked like his confidence was shot in front of goal.
John Terry has been quick to come to his defence this morning and spoke of the fact that Torres wanted to take the spot kick he eventually missed as being a sign of things changing for Torres. He said:
“That’s a big sign — him grabbing the ball and taking it in the first place. Obviously, he’s a little bit short of confidence but to see him grab the ball, that’s maybe the change that he needs.
Scoring the goal was great for him as well. It only takes that one goal or something to happen for him to really kick on, but he’s putting in a shift for the team as well.
Sometimes that doesn’t get picked up as much as it should do. You know what it’s like for strikers. Mentally he has had to be very strong — and he is.
He has got the full support of the fans and the players. It will always remain that way.
We are eager for him to score goals. He will certainly get the support and the assists from the quality that we have in the side.”(Source)
You wouldn't be alone in thinking that we have heard this all before when it comes to Torres. He has promised plenty but delivered only now and again and it's has been frustrating for Torres and for all of us.
I have backed Torres throughout his time here but in recent times had begun to change my opinion of him as like I said earlier, he looked like a man with no self belief and his confidence in front of goal looked shot.
In saying that, once he got a whack in the face after scoring his goal, he played like a man possessed and I just wonder if having that anger inside him has sparked something in Torres that we haven't seen before.
I have always said about Torres that form is temporary but class is permanent and Torres on his day IS world class. The problem is we haven't seen Torres have too many of his days have we!
So what do you people think about what Terry has said about Torres and the player himself? Do you agree with JT and still back him and believe that the other night could be a change in the fortunes of Fernando Torres or do you disagree?
