Apart from Oriol Romeu, Rafa Benitez has virtually a full strength squad at his disposal now and it's time to evaluate our squad. Everyone has and is entitled to their own opinions and I am keen to find out from as many Chelsea fans as possible what they believe to be our strongest eleven.
For example, I was watching the "Weekend Review" on Chelsea TV last night and Jason Cundy made a good point about the two games coming up this week. He stated that in order to pick the starting eleven against Sparta Prague on Thursday, Rafa Benitez should pencil in on paper what he believes to be his strongest eleven for Manchester City and then work backwards from there for Sparta.
So what of our strongest eleven? I want to break this down to separate posts to gauge as much opinion as possible. If you had to pick the Chelsea back four to take on Manchester City that Sunday morning sitting in that Hotel in Manchester, who would be in it?
The Back Four.
For me there is no argument, Ashley Cole is nailed on at left back as Ryan Bertrand although doing well, is far from ready to take his place at the moment.
At right back Cesar Azpilicueta has come in and impressed us all. His work rate is immense and his willingness to get up and down that right hand side has given us a balance in the side that we have lacked since Paulo Ferreira originally came to the club under Mourinho.
Branislav Ivanovic is solid and versatile. He has proven himself at right back and gives us a better defensive option at right back in my view up against sides we know can hurt us down the wing. At centre half, his preferred position he hasn't exactly been fantastic on a consistent basis.
Gary Cahill is the natural successor to John Terry in my eyes and a future Chelsea captain. You can see his desire to not concede a goal, he throws himself at everything and his defensive instincts has served him well at times already at Chelsea.
John Terry our captain and still the best defender we have at this club. An inspiration to everyone at the club and most importantly of all the voice on the pitch that we lack whenever he isn't there. The first name on the team sheet if fit in my book.
David Luiz is someone to think about before you settle on your strongest eleven as I can't tell you what his best position is now. Luiz reads the game arguably better than anyone and that's something to consider. He has proven himself at the back and recently in the middle of midfield but what is his best position?
There are plenty of things to consider here. Do you want to remain defensively solid and pick players to remain that way or do you want a balance to the side if we struggle to break teams down and push your full backs forward?
Name your strongest back four!
