One story that appeared at the weekend that caught my attention was that Arsenal are looking to make a move for Nathaniel Chalobah at the end of the season and are willing to offer him first team football and it's a worrying situation for us at Chelsea.
There has always been criticisms aimed at the blues for the situation with our younger players and the limited chances they have of breaking into the first team and remaining a part of the squad first and foremost and to then be given playing time.
Ryan Bertrand is one player who has come through the process and is now an established member of the squad and the team as he continues his development. I read a report somewhere a while ago that part of his plan was to feature in at least fifteen Chelsea games with the first team this season (which would explain some of his appearances as substitute).
It's common knowledge that Chelsea have 23 players out on loan this season as part of their development at the club. The club has to be looking at the likes of Nathaniel Chalobah and his performances at Watford this season, having made 27 appearances already, with a long term plan and it's important that we fend off the Arsenal if their reported interest has substance.
Chalobah can play anywhere across the back four or in midfield and it's his performances for Watford that have really caught the eye and it's no surprise Arsene Wenger's scouts at Arsenal are watching.
The problem for Chalobah, who has been talked of being the natural successor to John Terry within the club, will be what happens when he returns from his loan at Watford at the end of the season?
With a new manager in charge and after Chelsea's limp and laboured performance yesterday, we expect to see more financial investment at the club with big name signings coming here in addition to the players we already have. Does that mean another season on loan for Chalobah or, if Arsene Wenger and Arsenal come calling, he would find it too hard to resist being given the chance of immediate first team football?
