After his two goal debut against Southampton yesterday, Rafa Benitez was quick to praise Demba Ba after the game but with the big man impressing on his debut, attention switched to a certain Spaniard rested for the game sitting on the bench.
As expected comparisons to the start Fernando Torres made at the club appeared on social networking sites all over the place and Rafa was asked about the "problem" he has now at the club as to who starts the next game home to Swansea in the League Cup. He said:
“It is always important for strikers to score goals. I prefer to have this problem of choosing who to play up front. You have to be careful with just one and it is important for the team to have different options. They will compete — or maybe we will match them together. Ba played with Cisse at Newcastle so he can play with two strikers. He is clever.”So the questions I am asking YOU the Chelsea fans this morning is:
Do you think we could play Torres and Ba together and if you do, who would have to miss out? It's an interesting situation that we have now at the club after watching Torres' form dip in and out since the start of the season.
It's also important to point out that Fernando Torres has made an important contribution to the season so far and is in double figures in all competitions.
So what will Rafa Benitez decide to do? Will he rotate the two and continue with our 4-2-3-1 formation or will he decide at some stage to go with both of them up front and start them together?
I think there is something in that from my own personal opinion. You look at Torres and do not see him as a target man up front. We do not want to lump balls up in the air to Torres and ask him to win headers, we do not want to see Torres dropping deep to come and show for the ball, to hold it up and bring others into play. That's what I can see Demba Ba doing for us in addition to getting on the end of things as he did yesterday.
We want to see Torres up on the shoulder of the last defender, waiting for that final pass that he can run on to. We want to see him looking at making runs in behind the defence and causing them a different problem to that of Demba Ba.
I think they have the potential to work together but to do that and make it successful is another thing. Who would Rafa have to sacrifice from our current preferred starting eleven to make it happen?
Could we drop the second holding midfielder and change the formation to 4-1-3-2 and keep the Hazard, Mata, Moses combination in behind the front two or would it unbalance the team?
Could we make the switch to 4-4-2 with Mata playing in the middle next to someone like Mikel or Ramires?
What do you think of the options we have now since the arrival of Demba Ba?
Come and post your opinion as I would love to hear from as many Chelsea fans as possible on this today.

That will b great 2 see ba & Torres playing 2gether.......
ReplyDeleteIf i were Rafa, would deploy both strikers in ma startn XI regularly&wen we dont nid a lotta peeps upfront den I can switch to a lone striker&rotate btw Ba&Torres...I'd just have 2 sacrifice Lamps/Oscar/Moses,wyl Hazard&Mata get d nod, awevr dependn on d opponent, wen we wana rot8 d aforementioned trio of Lamps/Oscar&moses wd b readily available, with Marin&piazon w8n 2 provide competition.David luiz wd b used as a defensive midfeilder&defender intermittently!
ReplyDeleteWith moses going to the afcon, I think that's the slot in which we can deploy both strikers. Switch into a 4-4-2, the kind Man Untd played against us with rooney, Rvp and hernandez all playing. Ba can play that pivot role of collecting and spreading or finishing while torres can get that free role upfront. Less pressure on him thus giving him just what he needs to fire up again.
ReplyDeleteI prefer only Ba upfront while Torres should at the bench and serve as substitute. Atleast he has play too many matches this season alone, he needs to rest. I av seen enough quality Ba possess, so let carry on with 4-2-3-1 formation.
ReplyDeleteI dnt tink dat wld b a gud tin 2play both of them cos I tink torres is jst after his personnal glory dat y he is concern wat d headlines will read abt him rather dan d club n cfc wld nt tk dat aleast nt d fans so 4me Ba shld b rotated wit torres
ReplyDeleteBoth Ba and Torres should start against Swansea and if it's a poor showing then Rafa should decide but for now I would love to see the both of them get a chance to play together
ReplyDeletePersonally I think Torres has had his chance we've catered to his every whim and he still strolls around like we owe him. I was a big supporter of giving him time but how long does it take a once world class striker to pit the ball in the net. Look at ba works hard and moves and so he scores. Nandos had his chance and he take rafa with him
ReplyDeletewe could switch to 3-1-4-2
ReplyDelete3: ivanovic, cahill, luiz
1: mikel/ramires
4: azpilicueta, mata, hazard, cole
2: ba, torres
The two of them might not possibly play together cause Torres hasnt got the quality of a supporting striker who can hold up play and also defend just like Rooney does.Ba has got some measure of those qualities but he prefers playing as the top striker.remember if we have dis too we'll be reduced either in midfield or defence.rotation is d best to create competition and also both players wont burn out.
ReplyDeleteThey should & will not play together (except if we are chasing a game in d 2nd half) becuse: (1) it defeats the reason for bringing Ba which is that Torres can REST! So they'll be rotated. (2) we don't need the two of them to play together! Cos other players are scoring too. (3)switching to 4-4-2 now would only distrupt the team, after Benitez had drilled & organize the team for 4-2-3-1 (4) 4-4-2 means Mata, Oscar, Ramires, Lamps, Mikel, even Luiz fighting for just 2 CM positions! (5) 4-4-2 would likely nullify the "no.10" role where Mata & Oscar thrives!
ReplyDeletedey shudn't.. Unless both of dem ar in high scoring form..
ReplyDeleteThey shouldn't we only have two strikers now,we can't afford to burn their energy @ dsame time,d best thing is for whoever is in form to be given d nod nd we all know who dat is BA torres has had his chances,so now let's give BA d go,nd for all those still supporting torres, let's face d fact, torres is dead nd gone
