At the Ballon d'Or press conference yesterday, Pep Guardiola spoke of his desire to return to coaching but wouldn't indicate where he intends to go which has led to all sorts of speculation as usual. If reports are to be believed, it seems that Chelsea and Bayern Munich will battle it out for his signature next summer.
Guardiola said:
I will return next season because I am young, but I have been living the kind of life that I wanted and one that my family also deserved. I don’t look back. You take decisions because they have to be taken, I don’t look at the reasons. The rest is not important.I just wonder how YOU the Chelsea fans feel initially about him? Do you think that he would have the same levels of success here as he did at Barcelona or, do you feel that he had everything already in place there and to come here and try and recreate that would take time that maybe under Abramovich he wouldn't have?
It's clear to everyone the talent Guardiola has as a manager but again we are talking about a one club man here. Someone that finished playing and took up working with the youth and then reserve set up at the Nou Camp so in effect, as soon as he took over as first team coach, he knew the club from top to bottom at the rising stars he could have at his disposal.
Just to back up my argument about Guardiola, let's have a look at Jose Mourinho for example. He has been there and done it in Portugal with Porto, England with Chelsea, Italy with Inter Milan and Spain with Real Madrid beating Pep Guardiola's Barcelona side to the title last season. There is no comparison between the two in my eyes at the moment.
Now not that it means much, but my own gut feeling about Guardiola is that he could end up at Manchester City if Roberto Mancini doesn't win the Premier League this season. Mancini and City's record in the Champions League has to be a worry for the owners there and if their season comes crashing down this term, I wouldn't put it past the owners to make a change even though he has just been handed a new contract (before they were knocked out of the CL by the way).
I would have Jose Mourinho back here in a heartbeat over Pep Guardiola without doubt purely and simply because of his past here, his record and because of the obvious doubts over Guardiola making a success as manager anywhere else other than Barcelona.
