Luka Modric had been a Chelsea target for a couple of seasons. In fact if you can remember, the player himself talked up a move to Stamford Bridge two summers ago as Tottenham rejected FOUR Chelsea offers with the highest being reported at £40m!
As we all know, Daniel Levy stood his ground and the deal never happened. As a result, we signed Juan Mata instead which was arguably one of the best deals we have ever done at this club so we do have Levy to thank for that don't we!
As a result, Modric moved to Real Madrid last summer for a reported £33m and within months of his arrival, he has been voted "The worst signing of the season" by the Spanish Newspaper Marca's readers.
Admitting himself to struggle to adapt to life in Madrid and having only made eight league starts for the club, speculation is rife that Jose Mourinho could admit defeat and sell him as early as this month.
I personally do not think that will happen this month but maybe in the summer if his woes out there continue. However, with the transfer window being open and the press reporting every single whisper or rumour being banded about, it's seems that Chelsea and Manchester United have their eye on Modric, with the player being lined up as a possible replacement for the outgoing Frank Lampard.
What do you people think about this one and Modric in particular?
For me the deal is dead in the water as we have more than enough Modric type players at this club. Modric coming in would add to the creativity we already have in midfield but is like for like with Juan Mata and Eden Hazard.
Chelsea will never be able to replace Frank Lampard no matter what anyone says in my book. When I say that, I am talking about replicating his goalscoring record from midfield. Give me the name of someone in football now, in his position that scores as many goals as he has, or has the potential to do so?
Modric to Chelsea for me is a no brainer as I believe we should be looking at alternative options and players that bring goals to the squad from midfield.
