Ray Wilkins is featured in The Sun today speaking of the situation at Chelsea. Having been a player, club Captain and part of our coaching staff on two occasions, Wilkins is familiar with recent times at the club but explains that although he only left the club two seasons ago, things have changed at the club and it's because of those changes that we may have missed out on Pep Guardiola and could also miss out on Jose Mourinho.
He said:
You can bet your life that people contacted by the club have one eye on their salary and a possible pay off if things go wrong before they actually consider the potential of our football club and the actual job here.
The amount of money paid out to hire and fire people is ridiculous when you think about it but like Wilkins says, who can tell Roman otherwise?
We complain about his treatment of managers but look at what he has won with the club so surely there has been a method to his madness.
The big problem now is what has happened with Pep Guardiola. It has to be a real kick in the teeth for Abramovich who has made no secret of his desire to bring the ex Barcelona man to the club. For Guardiola to reject Roman at least three or four times has to make Abramovich realise that he can't have everything his own way.
As for Mourinho, like Wilkins I would love to see him back here but is it just a pipe dream? Surely the lure of coming back to finish the job he started has to appeal to Jose. It's the once club he always talks about feeling at home. Imagine if Roman did contact him about a possible return, imagine the power Jose would have here. Mourinho would hold all the cards at the club as far as players are concerned, who comes in and who leaves and Roman Abramovich would be forced to admit defeat and hand over control to Mourinho. would he do it after all this time? Maybe.
Wilkins doesn't seem to think so but I disagree purely because of Guardiola.
Could what has happened with Guardiola change the way Roman Abramovich approaches the playing side of things at Chelsea? Only time will tell.

Any manager who accepts the Chelsea job knows exactly what they are walking into. There is a big salary that comes with the job but also the understanding that you could be relieved of the post at any time.
Guardiola may well have decided that he didn’t want to be in a situation like that. He will have studied the squads at Chelsea and at Bayern and might feel his best opportunity of capturing big trophies at the moment lies in Munich.
I was surprised when Mr Abramovich dispensed with the services of Carlo a year after we won the double and when he sacked Robbie Di Matteo a few months after winning the Champions League.
But the owner doesn’t hesitate when he thinks it’s time for a change and you don’t get much warning that it’s coming. In my case, it was literally ‘crash, bang wallop and off you go’. That’s the way he works.
And when you think of the money he has spent on Chelsea, he’s entitled to do what he wants. If I’d spent £1billion on something, I wouldn’t have too many people telling me what to do, either.
When you employ the biggest coaches in the world, these are people who are going to have an opinion. And because they all now have the luxury of wealth, they’re no longer afraid to speak out for fear of getting the sack because they already have all the money they can spend.
I’d love to see Jose back and so would the fans.
The Premier League needs characters like him and he’s a big man for a big job.But there’s too much past history between him and the owner at Chelsea. And because Jose also likes to spend money on the players he wants, there would be a conflict there straight away.
In the time that I was on the coaching staff, it was always the coach that selected the players. I know for a fact that Carlo wanted Fernando Torres and David Luiz so Mr Abramovich went out and got them. I don’t know if that situation still applies today but there has clearly been a change in philosophy lately.I agree with Wilkins here and being honest I think we all do. We have seen the likes of Jose Mourinho, Avram Grant, Scolari, Hiddink, Ancelotti, Villas-Boas, Di Matteo and now that idiot Benitez in charge of our football team and the Chelsea Job has become a joke really.
