OPINION: Should RDM revert back to "Defensive Chelsea"?

One thing was for sure after the disappointing result yesterday, it seems as though Roberto Di Matteo realises that in order for Chelsea to get back to winning ways, things need to change and quickly.

It's all well and good Chelsea signing Falcao in January but you need to be solid at the back to form a base to build from. It's seems that yesterday could be the game and defensive performance that was the straw that broke camels back so to speak.

Judging by his comments to the media after the game, we could see Chelsea revert back to the defensive approach that became part and parcel of his playing style last season.

He said:
The pressure is always there, it doesn’t help when you don’t win games. We are disappointed with where we are in this moment and maybe it’s time to have a look at it and changes things, like the set-up of the team and maybe sacrifice some attacking options to be more solid.
I think all of us probably looked at how we have been set up to play this season with Mata, Oscar and Hazard playing in behind the striker and realised that it could leave us exposed at the back.

The "we will score more than you" approach seems to have worked early doors but if anything of late, the doors have come off the hinges!

It's obvious that Chelsea miss John Terry's organisation and voice at the back. Without him there, it just seems to me that people are looking around for a leader on the pitch to inspire them one minute and give them a right good kick up the arse the next and we just don't have that at the moment.

I do have to criticise RDM here and explain that the rotation of our back four hasn't helped at all this season. Successful sides will have a settled and established back four that work as a cohesive unit with the Goalkeeper.

Imagine being Petr Cech at the moment, he has had all sorts playing in front of him as different partnerships and it cannot be good as you need to get to know your defence and how they play together.

I know JT has had to miss four games due to suspension and now injury but he MUST decide on a settled partnership in the next few games and stick with it. Who that is to be is a difficult decision but for me when JT is back, he needs to play next to Gary Cahill with Cole and Ivanovic next to them either side.

As for reverting back to the defensive formation who will miss out?

At present, our starting line up through midfield is Mikel, Ramires, Hazard, Oscar and Mata. Which one if any of them will RDM sacrifice?

I have said this from day one and stand by my argument, Mikel HAS TO start games because it will only be when he isn't playing, you will realise how much we would miss him and his defensive qualities just in front of our back four.

If anything, I can see either Oscar or Ramires missing out with RDM selecting one or the other with a possible switch back to 4-3-3.

So with a trip to Juventus coming up on Tuesday in a game that Chelsea simply cannot afford to lose, we could see the beginning of a new Chelsea under RDM for the remainder of the season.

The question is, should RDM revert to the defensive Chelsea that led us to Champions League and FA Cup glory last season for the remainder of this season?

Carefree & KTBFFH!

  1. Its not a matter of sacrificing one midfielder but d defenders tightening up n shipping in less goals.d CB partnership should be Cahill n Iva with Azpi n Cole as FBs.Mikel becomes a fulltime holding midfielder not crossing d midfield line. and Ramires forages up n down d pitch
