Our young central midfielder, currently on loan at Middlesbrough, has spoken out about his loan spells so far, telling us about his experiences and also showing that his loyalties lie with the Blues!

When asked about his loan move to Swansea, Josh replied;

I went at a bad time. They wanted to stay up, they were playing really well and Brendan didn’t want to change the team so it was tough to get in. Gylfi  Sigurdsson came in a week before me, he was on fire from the start so he had to play. They did well and I can’t blame him.

So it seems that there are no hard feelings between the midfield man and former mentor/current Liverpool boss Brendan Rogers and that he fully understands why he wasn't picked regularly. This is a very mature response and shows that he is a very humble and intelligent guy.

He then goes on to talk about his current loan spell, why he chose Middlebrough and how it is going so far;

I could have gone to a few teams but I met Tony, got on with him and his assistant Mark Venus, saw the training ground. I know his style is to get the ball down, pass it through midfield, so it was an easy choice. He drums it in every day in training. I am playing games, which is what I came to do, and Middlesbrough are doing well. The standard is good, really competitive, anyone can beat anyone... My body is getting used to it but I am feeling fitter than ever and training is not as intense because of all the games.’

Looking good so far i have to say, at Middlesbrough he is starting the majority of games under Tony Mowbray, they are playing good passing football which can only help his development. Add that to the fact he is getting a taste of the physical demands of regularly in the first team, learning his trade in a very competitive division (as Ryan Bertrand did) and improving all the time.

Finally he commented on his place at Chelsea, where he sees himself playing/his best position and professes his loyalty to his boyhood club!

I don’t see Mata,  Hazard or Oscar in my position. It would be good to play with those players, they are all on fire. I am a deeper midfielder, so that’s my favourite position, where Mikel, Lampard or Ramires play. I’ve been there (Chelsea) since I was seven and came through the youth system, so that is my dream club. That is who I want to play for, but this experience can only help me.’

(Source for all above quotes)

So with our widely discusses problems over the last few years of not having a deeper play-maker who dictates the tempo, this is some good news. Chelsea have gotten Raul Meireles off of the books, Essien out on loan and it is looking like Frank's last season with the club, could Josh step in next season after gaining experience in the Championship and give us that quality from deep that we need in the 4-2-3-1 formation?

All in all, a very promising interview showing a maturing player and hopefully a future star at the Bridge!

What do you fellow Chelsea fans think?

Can you see Josh stepping up to the plate next season and becoming a prominent figure in the first team?

Leave your thoughts!

  1. I think he Should be playing in the league next season, with middlesbrough or other "ball-passing" club but NOT chelsea so that his development continues!
