Despite the defeat to Manchester United yesterday, Chelsea remain top of the league by a point from both the Manchester clubs and five points above Tottenham.
I just wanted to ask Chelsea fans all over the world your opinion on our start to the season and whether or not YOU feel that we can call ourselves realistic title challengers?
Our start to the season has been fantastic with wins over Newcastle, Arsenal and Tottenham already this season. Despite the result yesterday, there were plenty of encouraging signs to take from the game for Chelsea with the amount of problems we caused United. You only have to think back to the game to realise just how busy De Gea was in goal for United compared to Petr Cech yesterday to see that.
No one really thought that Chelsea would click as quickly as they have this season. The signings of Eden Hazard and Oscar to play alongside Juan Mata has been a revelation and those three players will pose problems for ANY team we come up against.
Being honest, I thought that Eden Hazard would settle in alot quicker than Oscar because he has been used to European football and the french league but Oscar has settled in just as quick.
Roberto Di Matteo has set out this season with the mindset of getting Chelsea back into the top four first and foremost with a view of closing the 25 point gap we finished behind the eventual title winners last season. No one in their right mind would have believed that we would already be out in front and sitting top of the league if we are honest, especially after Didier Drogba leaving.
Chelsea have been playing some great stuff this season with goals coming from everywhere and that is encouraging. OK, at times we need to be tighter at the back as exposed yesterday and in midweek. Let's also not forget just how Atletico took us apart in Monaco.
Overall to me, the signs are more than encouraging and Chelsea have responded to the questions being asked of them. We were asked the question against Newcastle after they beat us at home last season and beat them comfortably. We were asked the question away at the Emirates and once again provided everyone with a glimpse of just what our attacking three are capable of.
We were asked the question at White Hart Lane on more than one occasion and came back fighting with a display of attacking football they couldn't live with and once again yesterday, Chelsea provided Manchester United with a real test as we carved them open for 30 minutes and created numerous chances. The score could have been very different if it wasn't for De Gea.
Chelsea only have Manchester City left to play out of our title rivals this season and so far have proven to be more than a match for everyone else. The game against City coming up with once again ask questions of Chelsea. If we lose then we will need to dig deep for the remainder of the season but I am sure we will be there fighting towards the business end of the season. If we win, people WILL talk of Chelsea being the real deal.
Chelsea are a very different proposition that they have been in the Premier League and getting the job done against sides lower down in the league. We just need to make sure we do our job week in, week out and to make sure we give a good account of ourselves in the return games against United, Arsenal, Spurs and Newcastle to ensure we are right in there at the death.
Can Chelsea call themselves realistic title contenders? I believe they can. The Christmas period will be key as usual and it will be interesting to see where we are at the turn of the new year.
Right now, we sit top of the league and have been really, really impressive going forward. Let's hope it's the pattern of things to come for the remainder of the season!.
What do you think of our start to the season and do you think that Chelsea are back as realistic title challengers?
Would love to hear from as many of you as possible on this!
