I can't help but think that in some quarters, Roberto Di Matteo doesn't get the credit he deserves especially on this blog with some of the comments that have been flying about over the previous couple of weeks!
Think about it for a moment. Chelsea are three points clear at the top of the Premier League and unbeaten. OK it was a disappointment to lose the UEFA Super Cup to Atletico Madrid but at the end of the day it's not such a big deal as the Intercontinental Cup is more important in my view.
We have only dropped points away to QPR which isn't really that bad considering our rivals have either lost games or dropped points in more than one game so why people are still moaning about RDM baffles me.
I have to give full credit to RDM for having the balls to make big decisions already this season. I don't think any of us expected Frank Lampard to remain on the bench for Arsenal last Saturday did we?
He made the bold decision (based on previous) to leave him out and go with his attacking three and Ramires next to Mikel and it worked. He has proven in that one game that he is prepared to make these types of decisions for the good of the team and for now it seems that everyone is on board.
Some people are not convinced about Robbie and believe that he will still play a certain way with certain players but surely the Arsenal game is a wake up call to you all?
His team selections and substitutions have worked for the most part and have paid off. Who would have ever thought that Ryan Bertrand would start the Champions League final for example. Look at his use of Juan Mata and how he has performed since he was rested. Look at his substitutions against Stoke. He brought on Frank Lampard & Victor Moses who were both heavily involved in the build up to our winning goal.
It's not just during the season that Robbie has come in and played a big part. It's important to remember that he played a big part in the likes of Eden Hazard, Oscar and Marko Marin joining the club as he was involved in negotiations to complete their deals.
Watching the Sky documentary the other day 'Kings of Europe - The Chelsea Story" it was revealed that Di Matteo made one important decision off the pitch in order to get the best out of the players in Munich.
RDM spoke himself of the fact that players families put up with everything that is involved in being a professional footballer and it was important for him to have that "personal touch" to inspire the players so, the night before the game, he organised for the players Wives, Girlfriends, Children and parents of the younger players to attend a meeting/dinner and each one of them spoke to their player in front of everyone and spoke of how proud of them they were etc.
As JT says in the documentary: "It was a nice touch and thinking about it now gets me emotional a little bit but is something that we will always remember!"
The general opinion of Di Matteo looking from the outside in at the club seems to be that he was just a stop gap until Guardiola came along. He jumped at the chance to take over at the club and you have to say up to this point, he has very rarely let us down. In my opinion he deserved the contract he has been given without question.
I posted one of the best Chelsea videos I have seen recently in the previous post to this one on here, called The Di Matteo effect at Chelsea. Take a look at it after reading this post and have a look at the beginning of it. Looking back to games we struggled in under AVB it makes you realise just how well we have been doing since RDM took over.
The players love him and WANT to play for him and that's massive. Just look around and try and find a story in the press or the media with Frank Lampard kicking off about not playing these last couple of games as you will not find one!.
I know some people still (for some reason) aren't totally convinced with Robbie in charge but I am appealing to you to take a step back, look at everything as a whole to just how far we have come under his management from where we found ourselves then, to where we find ourselves now.
The Chelsea team we are looking at now is exciting and full of attacking flair and is something very different to what we have been used to. We are used to Chelsea's strong and physical approach to games and some people have doubted whether or not we can change our style so quickly. The general opinion I can see is that people are impressed with Chelsea and surprised at just how quickly the likes of Hazard and Oscar have settled in.
Roberto Di Matteo has taken this club forward in such a short space of time and it's great to see what he has achieved here. I believe that we will get better and better this season as players get used to playing with each other and the team continues to evolve.
It's about time he gets the credit from the supporters he really deserves!
Carefree & KTBFFH!
