Now I know I could be going over the top here but I wanted to ask ALL Chelsea fans all over the world what they think about our current team and the likes of Juan Mata, Eden Hazard and Oscar in particular, compared to exciting Chelsea teams of the past.
Now I have been a fan of Chelsea for over 30 years and the earliest memories I have is early eighties where for the most part, Chelsea struggled. It was the late eighties for me after Chelsea were relegated and John Neal took over and put together the Division Two title winning side that included the likes of Dixon, Speedie, Nevin, Bumstead, Spackman, Canoville etc. Now that was a good team!
It was into the nineties that we saw glimpses of exciting times at the club and especially in the second half of the decade as Ruud Gullit took over and took Glen Hoddle's revolution one step further. With the likes of Zola, Di Matteo, Wise, Hughes and Vialli, Chelsea became a top club once again by winning the FA Cup, League Cup and UEFA Cup Winners Cups. Who could ever forget that Champions League campaign with Barcelona at home and AC Milan away with Dennis Wise' goal in the San Siro!
Into the 21st Century and the exciting times continued with the likes of Desailly, Leboeuf, Poyet were added to Wise, Di Matteo, Zola and Tore Andre Flo as we lifted the FA Cup once again in 2000.
It wasn't long after that the emergence of Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink and Eidur Gudjohnsen flourished in our side scoring goals for fun featuring alongside a newly signed Frank Lampard.
Claudio Ranieri continued to build on Chelsea's growing reputation by taking us to the FA Cup Final in 2002 and Champions League Qualification. We lost the FA Cup final to the Arsenal that year but the side we had then was good.
It was in 2003 that things really took off. Ken Bates sold Chelsea to Roman Abramovich and Chelsea became an exciting club with big name players. Think back to the end of the that first season with all the new big name signings that came to the club such as Joe Cole, Veron, Crespo, Mutu and Makelele.
It was when Jose Mourinho took over in 2004/5 and we saw the emergence of the 4-3-3 formation by accident through Drogba's injury and we saw the likes of Eidur Gudjohnsen, Arjen Robben and Damian Duff operate together that for me, up until that point, that was THE MOST exciting Chelsea team I had ever personally witnessed.
We had style, we had guts and we had skill with added quality in all areas and the back to back title winning side back then with all the players we had doing the business, before this season, was it for me. Crespo, Joe Cole, Duff, Robben, Tiago, Lampard, Makelele, Terry, Gallas, SWP, Drogba, Essien etc were simply out of this world.
Some people would argue the side in recent seasons has been exciting too. The Cup winning side under Guus Hiddink. The double winning side under Carlo Ancelotti and our Champions League winning and FA Cup winning side last season.
Chelsea have had some big, big names put on the blue shirt and ply their trade at the Bridge and have had success in different ways. In recent times, we have seen some levels of success before Roman's major investment in our club but HUGE levels of success ever since up till now but is THIS Chelsea side finally what dreams are made of for Roman and the Chelsea fans?
I know it's early days but before you even think it, remember that these players are still getting used to playing with each other, still getting used to how they think with the ball at their feet and the levels of understanding they have together.
They haven't won anything yet and are a long, long way from doing so but, we have seen how in recent seasons how we have struggled to break teams down. We have seen Chelsea come up with blanks against big teams last season especially against our rivals and we have already beaten Newcastle and Arsenal this season with Spurs and United up next.
This Chelsea team has so much potential and I haven't even considered the likes of Victor Moses, Marko Marin and Daniel Sturridge yet!.
For me, it's the level of understanding they already have, the short and quick passes they are playing to each other that are leaving defenders giddy that excites me. Finally we have a team that has more then one option to take teams apart and we don't have to rely on just the one player to create and craft in our side like we did on Mata last season. We are already back up there with the days of Duff, Gudjohnsen and Robben in my eyes and can go even better.
I wasn't around to see Hudson, Osgood and Cooke but judging by the stories I have heard over time, I am sure they would be right up there too.
So come on Chelsea fans, I am asking ALL of you reading this article, to spare me just FIVE minutes and give your opinion. I thank those that do so on a regular basis and I ask you all to do so again. However, it's the Chelsea fans that just read things like this and can't be bothered to reply or don't have the time. Come on and make time and come and give YOUR view on what YOU believe to be the most exciting Chelsea team you have ever seen. Answer me this question:
Carefree & KTBFFH!
We know what we are, We know what we are! Champions of Europe! We know what we are!

Nice Article i would say. No doubt our present squad is hugely a blend of incredible talents Mata, Hazard, Oscar, Piazon, Moses, Marko etc and so far we all can gladly say we're enjoying watching our team play week in week out but the big question i would rather love asking is this, Can this talent packed team exhume the kinda character seen played out by their predecessors?
ReplyDeleteWe've been hailed this past years for our defending prowess, last season's europe triumph is a talking point and this was largely down to the players, my fear with this flair playing dudes is their weakness to defend and i hope we dont get caught on that.
Irrespective of that though, its a super entertaining team but i would only dub them the 'best' based on the laurels i see by May.
Very good question, I think that our team now is the most balanced midfield we have ever had, along with our solid defence with luiz, terry, cole, ivanovic, cahill and as you said they are just getting used to the way eachother play, so if Torres can consistantly put the ball past the keeper, than there's no telling what this chelsea squad can accomplish this year, and many years to come
ReplyDeleteThis is really a good team but i still prefer the robben-duff days, that team was out of this world.
ReplyDeleteWell said and it was nice seeing the great names that have ply their trade in chelsea.what we have at the moment is the strike force in the making. Deffinately when these new palyers cliq OMG it will be the killer force and unstoppable. I feel contineous winning will make them stronger and with this sets of young talented players in the team I can say bring on spuds. All I want is our defence to be very compact. Luiz is a good player but times without numbers this season he has always loose focus which has caused us and won't want such performance when we have to player other big teams. But in all we have a EPL and CL title team and am proud! Chelsea!!!!
ReplyDeleteOur greatest team, well 1997 when we won our first major trophy in 26 yrs & the first since I was 4 yrs old I didn't think it could get any better, before that bobby Campbell's team that won promotion back to div 1 with most goals & pts after not winning any of the first 6 games. Luca's team which he took over from rudd league FA & cup winners cups at this point I'm living the dream no more a joke in the music halls what is what an old gooner I used to work with called us , our first season in cl & getting out of groups a sf v Monaco ,then 2005 the title & again in 06 league cup FA cups another league Jesus Christ I used to be happy if we beat spurs home & away each yr .2012 19.05 the holy grail European champions first London club to do so no other London club can ever make fun of us ,the way we done it never giving up, a team pulling in one direction together . I cried that night I'm not ashamed to say . I can't pick a greatest team I've loved every team I've seen since I first went in 1974 aged 7 with my dad . A lot of up's & down's mostly up's now i'm still on cloud 9 living the dream & this season, things are looking even better. I'm never coming down thank you RA .
ReplyDeleteNaaaah, this team beats any by miles... Robben and Duff were way too direct and predictable and although this is hard to defend against, its nowhere near the difficulty of tracking the movement of Hazard, Mata and Oscar simultaneously. Trophies or not, once this team gells fully, it will be one of the most feared teams in world football
ReplyDeleteThe Chelsea team now is out of this world. Yet what is more breath taking is the midfield trio which contains the likes of Hazard, Oscar and Mata. They are the most exciting prospects in world football, and to top that, there are 3 of them thrown into the same team and are all working together to cause nightmares for the defences of our unlucky opponents. These players with a little more time and understanding could go on to emulate Osgood and Co. aswell as Duff, etc. They are soon to be legends and we have the privelige of watching their class week in and week out. They break down opposition with skill their opponents can not begin to comprehend. Their ball control is amazing, their touches mesmerizing and they have the finesse and power when needed to notch up the shots for their own goals. They are proving their class in helping an out-of-form striker (Fernando "El Nino" Torres #9) perform when he was labelled a has-been. They are by far the most exciting team Chelsea has yet to field. When I hear those 3 names in order called out on the teamsheet it sends shivers down my spine and gets the goosebumps going. Watching them play is as exciting for me as what christmas is to a child. If anything is to top this trio of magicians and maestros then my word it will have to be phenomenal.
ReplyDeleteAsk again in May, if there's at least a trophy or two, my answer will definitely be yes. Till then, Ancelotti's double winning team will be my pick. Yes this team has been outstanding so far, and they are still gelling. The talent is there for sure but do they have the toughness to go on till the end of the long season? Let's wait and see.
