We are only a couple of months into the season but if Chelsea were to beat Manchester United this afternoon and add them to the list of big, big clubs we have beaten in the league already, it would be a massive statement of intent from Roberto Di Matteo's side.
Before the season started, RDM spoke of his intention to close the 25 point gap that Chelsea finished behind BOTH Manchester sides last season. If Chelsea win today, we would sit four points clear of City and a massive SEVEN points clear of United at this early stage of the season.
United are conceding goals left right and centre at the moment, Chelsea are scoring goals and on paper you would have to go with a Chelsea win in a high scoring game this afternoon but in saying that, this is Chelsea v United and quite literally, anything goes.
We all remember the classic last season. Chelsea taking a 3-0 lead against the side from Old Trafford but then United hitting back and walking away from the Bridge with a point!.
United made their intentions clear with the signing of Robin Van Persie in the summer but apart from RVP, United still have the same framework within their team. It seems that Wayne Rooney will play off RVP and will look to drop into the hole to get much more involved in the team play and build up and Chelsea need to be aware of these two this afternoon.
It's United's defence that is causing most of their genuine supporters some concern. United miss Vidic big time and have struggled to cope with his absence. The game at Old Trafford against Tottenham, exposed the problems they have and I believe that Chelsea's front four can cause them all sorts of problems this afternoon.
It will be interesting to see how United line up against us knowing that we will line up with a 4-2-3-1 formation. Will United play five across the middle and leave RVP up top by himself? Will they look to match our formation?
Sir Alex Ferguson has been giving it some this week in the build up to the game as normal as he has claimed that this Chelsea side isn't anything compared to the side Jose Mourinho had in 2004/5 and 2005/6. As far as his claim goes, only time will tell but what United need to realise is that this Chelsea team is very, very different to any they have come up against before.
We still have our physical presence from set plays with the likes of Ivanovic, Luiz and Cahill getting forward but Chelsea's game now is about pass and move. The complete freedom that MAZACAR has now is something Barcelona esque and so far, sides have struggled to cope with us.
The problem sides have against Chelsea is who to deal with? If they look to take Juan Mata out of the game that leaves Eden Hazard and Oscar free. If one of our three has a bad game, there is still two others to deal with.
Manchester United simply have to deal with Chelsea's attacking three in midfield to have any chance of winning this game. They cannot rely on Rooney and RVP to win the game for them by themselves?
I firmly believe that if Chelsea can get the ball down, get plenty of possession, we can cause United all sorts of problems this afternoon and once again MAZACAR will be the catalyst!
Can United cope with Chelsea? Only time will tell but be warned United, this is a very, very different Chelsea!
Come on Chelsea !
